How to stop a horse biting

The challenge is to find something the horse dislikes the taste of strongly enough to have the desired aversive effect. Horses are more tolerant of bitter tastes than people. I was amazed to see someone painting povidone iodine solution on to a pony's tongue at the vet school without the pony batting an eyelid.
 
Reward him when he doesnt do it, tie him up when grooming, tacking up etc, leading him keep the lead tight so he cant get at it but not so you are hanging on to him, when he goes to get it or your hand jerk on the lead rope and say NO, but only say NO once and then carry on so he knows that the discomfort of the jerk stops when he stops biting, this is reward.
