well my "new" horse keeps running off. I havent ridden him for a while due to exams. But the person who owns him has been lunging him etc.

yesterday he got on, and as soon as he sat in the saddle he bronked down the long side, and he fell off. had to get some help to get on, and then the horse galloped off....
he went round to the school in hand, and he did the whole buck and gallop off... he then couldnt catch him, but when he did... he said he felt like he is full of energy as he is trying to work, but just gets quicker and quicker... i imagine he leans and piss*s off!!

normally have to ride in draw reins, but he is very light in the hand etc, and lovely to ride.. i think ive posted some pictures and info about him before.

i put him on the walker this morning, because i dont want to get on him until he has lost all the energy.

can i have some suggestions of what to do please?

not saddle or teeth, had them checked a few weeks ago

well normally he is turned out at around 8, and bought in at about 5 as he is better when left out for as long as possible
he has a handful of hifi and a tiny tiny amount of sugarbeet for tea
has 1 soaked haynet at night

i put him on the walker with the other 2, and then turned him out. he came in at 5ish and then left for about 30/45 mins while the owner mucked out. then brushed off, tacked up and ridden...

I've found tapping my boy's shoulder quite hard as soon as I feel him about to go stops and relaxes him. Makes no sense to me but it works! I think it's because you're not thinking about him going and not tensing which lets him relax?

Has anyone been riding him or has he solely been lunged?
Maybe he is feeling very well with the grass and very fit.
Not always a good mixture when a horse isn't physically ridden.
Just an idea?

thank you very much :-)

been lunged for the last 2 weeks, and hard... about 30/40 mins and he normally just canters around on his own

the problem we have is that hes an ex showjumper; and you cant use your hands or your legs as hes so sensitive.. i will suggest the whip etc...

ive offered to lunge him/walker him in the morning and lunch time ish for the rest of this week and next week; and he ride him in the evening.
he doesnt want me to ride him as he knows i struggle a bit with him anyways, and im not the most confident rider... so he is going to ride him

its annoying because hes normally so good, and has NEVER EVER bronked like that, or behaved like this...

he did used to run off when he first first had him, but that was because he was scared of being ridden.. but now hes not scared, just being a pain i think

xx

Is he maybe a little cold backed? Does his saddle fit? Maybe he's changed shape (lost a bit of muscle?) due to not being ridden (just a thought, probably wrong)?

I think if he is just being naughty, and his rider is confident and experienced enough, he should lunge horse first for however long it takes to settle him down, and then get straight on. Maybe he just needs some time to warm up and get the freshness out and relax before he's ready to settle down and work.

surely he would do it every time you rode him if he was cold backed?

will probably get the saddler out at the end of next week if he doesnt settle down.

definitly have to be lunged before he is ridden

Horses eh?
why do I always pick stupid nutters??
