As title really....

I have a very well bred black shetland- who will do county level showing.

I was told that with a black shetland, that you want to keep them jet black and try to prevent their coat etc. from bleaching brown.

How do people manage this?

He is in at night, out in the day with a full neck fly rug at the minute (although it's starting to rub his mane :(). His tail has bleached slightly.

I am thinking of getting him the supreme products hood (for when it is actually cool enough to put it on), in the hope that it might stop the full neck rugs from rubbing.

Any advice from showing experts, very welcome!

Black and liver chestnuts seem to need more copper. My black mare who lives out all year with minimal rugging, has stayed very black since i've been giving her brewers yeast.

Can you switch turnout so he's out at night without the need for a fly rug to prevent it rubbing? Snuggy hoods are good but if he gets hot in it then it will be even worse.

I fed seaweed on recommendation but to be honest didn't see a difference.

I cannot use normal combo rugs on my natives as they rub the mane, so i use the kool coat ones where its a normal rug with a sep neck cover but its permanently attached - these have never rubbed any of mine in all the years i've used them.

I keep my dark brown pony covered to prevent his mane bleaching and used to keep my previous black NF covered successfully :)

Try in during the day and out at night? It's good for waistlines too. I also wonder if there are any spray type products that could protect the coat a bit.

kool coat type rug and mix a human hair uv filter in to your coat shine/detangler spray.

i use the quik screen but its impossible to get in the UK now, so will have to resort to US import next time i need some.
