Luna is now 5 months old. She knows to sit, but has this horrible habit of jumping up when we’re doing the breakfast, dinner etc. She knows it’s wrong because as soon as I turn and look at her, she will sit and look at me, but then as soon as I turn back to her bowl, she’s up at my legs again. I give her a growl, or a sharp command, but unless I am actually looking at her, she completely ignores me.

I would knee her, or stick my leg out and push her over. Nicer people probably wouldn't!
Or avoid the situation altogether and shut her away while you prepare food. Ours are not allowed in the larder, so all three line up at the door and watch, then race off to their feeding station when I pick the bowls up.

Sometimes if you take them up on what they appear to be asking - and then take it to the next level, they kind of think they won't risk it again. I would grab her, mid jump if you can, lift her off the floor and hold her there for a few seconds. She may never ask again!!

Use you knee to block her, move or turn away to prevent her getting a surface or put your hand on her snout and put her back down on the ground again. Like Clodagh I bring the food from one place to another and the dog is not involved in he prep but this could be a good chance to teach a solid place command which is handy for lots of different scenarios.

Thanks guys. I do push her away with my leg, but unless I actually look at her, she ignores me. I will try that JillA.

She doesn’t come in the larder when I get the food, it is once it’s in the kitchen and I’m dishing up. Again, once her food is in the bowl, and I move (with bowl in hand), she will run straight into her crate, and sit and wait for it. She seems to know the rules, just forgets the in the middle bit!

Mine can get a bit lairy round food so I taught him either to wait in his crate if in the house or if in the kennel he must sit up on his bed and can only get off and eat when I say it's ok...teaches a bit of self restraint and performs the same function as the place command. At the start, if he put a foot off the bed then I lifted the bowl. They soon learn.

I would spend time teaching her to lie down somewhere away from food prep, probably where she can still see what is going on, but can learn that it is not her business. Also, as has been advised, teach her a good wait command so she must wait to tuck into her food until you give her the command to eat.
