very random question...
i get the massive rectangular bales of hay & my friend was looking after my horse while i was away & had to open the new bale, and the sections keep falling forward each time i use a bit more hay. other people dont have this prob tho. how do you stop it falling forward & making a mess. it's too late to rescue it now i think but for next time

I hate it when that happens!
I usually find it when someone else has taken a section - or part of a section. Often the bottom part of the section gets left behind and causes a wedge, meaning the top part flops forward. Grrr. I make sure they are clean sections and I guess I angle the section, wide at the bottom and leaning back on the rest of the bale?

You know that handy stuff called baler twine that they use to hold the bales square and together? If you make a loop in one end and tie a quick release knot through it it holds the bale square and together after you've started using it. Do it on two strands of twine for a more solid hold.

^ This is my pet peeve, glad it's not just! :D

Baler twine idea works great - but personally I've got a haybay I prefer. You can get them lots of places, and I've found I waste much less hay and the place is much tidier for using it!
