My horse has always been in a field with electric wire over the wooden fencing. Recently I moved him to a different yard where there is no electric wire and he has started to chew the fence, something Ive never seen him do before What can I do to stop him? People have mentioned painting crib ex onto the fence but surely that will wash off in the rain? Is it dangerous to creosote it? Or is there something else I can do! Help before I get in trouble cos my horse is causing damage!

Cribox or watered down disinfectant

It could be that he feels he is lacking certain vits/minerals, maybe you could try him on a general purpose supplement and feed more hay/haylage and see if that resolves it that way you will be dealing of the root of the problem rather than covering up the wood chewing with cribox etc. Failing that, if you find he continues you could either paint with Cribox or get the yard owners to place some wire netting over the fence.

K27 he is on general and joint supplements, has a feed morning and night and he is out 24/7 at the moment. Not sure what he is lacking! He will be coming in next week at night and will have plenty of haylage so Ill have to see if that makes a difference.

Saw on the 'money saving tips' sticky that watered down poo sprayed on fences and wood will do the trick, personally dont have any experience of it but wortha try! Might want to contact the poster from that thread.

Creosote works for me. Mine loves to chew the bottom of the posts and goes right through until they are dangling but he doesn't touch them once I put creosote all over.

I find it easier to put on than Cribox as well, but both jobs are messy.

Just to let you know Christmas Spirit, watered down pooh works !! Even better, that awful, black run-off from a wet dung heap. I have painted this on posts and it always works. The only down side is the need to 're-paint' approx. every 2 weeks but then you would have to do this with most things.

Happy pooh painting !!!!

I recently saw a friends horse gnawing away on a fence so I mixed up some pooh and water and then slapped it on the fence with a rubber glove on. The horse immediately stopped and hasn't gone back to that spot!
It definitely works and doesn't cost anything.
