It happened on the old saddle to the point of almost baldness and it's happening now with the lovely comfy fitting saddle!! As I ride the saddle is moving left right left right as pony is taking steps!!!! It's so frustrating and is starting to cause rub marks :( the constant friction is breaking off the hair! What do I do!! He's quite round so the saddle doesn't have much to 'hug' hahaha but I can't really get a special numnah as I have a remedial shim numnah!

to start with, I would get a saddler to check the fit. Once that's checked, there are various saddle pads and sticky girths, all sorts of tack really, but start with the fitting. x

I'm having the same problems with Bree, my friesian. I'm awaiting a professionally fitted saddle which should help no end.

I've just forked out for a nuumed anti slip numnah which is eye wateringly expensive (courtesy of a small tax rebate I got today). I have also bought a stubben string girth to try. Make sure your pony isn't breathing n when you tighten the girth as well.

You can get cheaper anti-slip pads and it's also been suggested to get some of the anti slip matting you get to go under rugs as this is a lot cheaper.

Hope this is helpful - I haven't tried any of these things yet except for the girth tightening.

Saddle fitter I'm afraid. A correctly fitting saddle should not move or rub. My horse has very little withers. When I got her she was in a medium saddle and saddle slipped all the time. Saddler came out and foot new second Hamdan saddle in wide/extra wide. Doesn't slip anymore. Same with barrel of a pony!! Had med saddle needed extra wide :-(

Saddler has actually been out this week haha so saddler is absolutely fine, it's always happened on him I think it's his gait?! Quite swingy and rocky? With the numnahs...I can't have anything too thick as it HAS to go with my shim half pad so anything too thick will make the saddle sit funny? Any other ideas? What about one of those non slip gel pads! I think it may be slipping at the moment as the saddle still needs to soften and mould a bit as it's still very new??xxxx

WOW H girth can be really useful on the right horse. It's no subsitute for an ill fitting saddle, but if it still moves, it can be the perfect solution. Not cheap though.

Saddle is fine haha not saddled :p and I have to use shims to make the saddle sit right and allow bad muscle to build up following a bad pinching saddle!x

Agree Wow H girth. Worked for our horse when he was young and had flat withers .Not all horses would like them though, just sold mine to someone on here for £75 which I think is about half new price.

Second opidiom from another saddle? Has saddle fit saddle with shims in place?

If had issues with last saddle has he had any body work done since as if muscles sore could b moving funny but treatment might help?

Also my horse (with bad fitting saddle) used to swing her shoulders quite a lot wIth.no reason. For other reasons I had to take her out of a bit and put her in a Dr Cooke bitless and interestingly enough she stoped swinging her shoulders!!
X

Yes the saddler fitted with the shims...she is a lavinia mitchell saddler sontjays what they do hahah :) and yes he has had physio so his back and everything is fine, that's why it's so frustrating!! Haha x

I had this problem and nothing would stop it. After being unhappy with my saddlers efforts I got a second opinion, ended up with one side stuffed differently and a saddle that doesn't move an inch - went from hating my saddle, awful position, slipping and sliding to thinking it was the bee knees and a much better trot within half an hour......

Ooooo also, is your saddle a wee bit too forward. Having the advice of two fingers from the scapula has made a world of difference to me and fatty in many ways....

The stubben string girth tightened after a few minutes was better today. While I'm waiting for my grippy numnah to arrive I'm going to try some non slip safety mat I got from the local hardware store under the numnah - it's very squidgy and a grid so she shouldn't feel it or sweat too much - but watch this space for whether I get bucked off.

I use the Acavallo thin sticky gel pad and a flexi girth to keep my saddle in the middle of my ropy poly zero withered hippo. Seems to do the trick.

Sounds like your saddle could be just a touch too far forward, needs to sit behind the withers and shoulders not on them. o

On my fatty the saddle always slips back, got saddler out etc etc, then saddler suggested i put saddle on as I would like it with girth on the slack side, move a few steps so saddle slips back this should be to its correct place, then tighten up the girth.

Funnily enough since doing this the saddle doesnt slip anymore and i now know i am not being unkind to him by riding on his shoulders and restricting his movement.

I also have an LM saddle with remedial shims and it rocks if I use the 1st and 3rd girth straps, if I use the 1st and 2nd it's solid as a rock. Perhaps you could try playing around with the girth?

Did you notice it rocking when the saddler fitted it? Did you mention it when they came and, if so, did they give you a reason for it doing it? Perhaps give them a call and say it's still doing it and see what they suggest?

I had this problem with my Friesian.
He was fitted twice by the same saddler and in the end I used the Numed numnah with some good effect. I tried the barnsby grip pad but that didn't help, also tried a Professional Choice girth - but that seemed to 'nip' him and he continually kept looking round at his girth and kicking his tummy.

Eventually got saddle checked by a different saddler who told me that the tree was very slightly twisted and the flaps were not level. (This was a Barnsby saddle!)
Anyhow splashed out on a 'Black Country' which has been adapted to fit me as I have long legs from hip to knee.
I am now selling all my grippy devices as it fits perfectly - one thing I was guilty of was placing my saddle too far forward, I have to be careful not to do this and impair his shoulder movement.

That's worth knowing. Bree, my friesian, is awaiting an Albion saddle that is being fitted by a saddler who came well recommended. I'm hoping it will help with her problems. But I have a nuumed anti-slip numnah on the way as well.
