For the past few days i have been battling with something which is determined to make its home in my brand new arena! It is digging a burrow at one end. I keep filling it back in and next day it is back again! Has anyone had any experience of this or any ideas how to stop it?

All I can think off is a cat alarm that you can buy in B&Q? (We have one as the locals love pooing on our lawn!)

They are motion sensored and let off a high pitch (we can't hear it) noise which scare them off.

Depends what's doing the digging:

If it's a badger searching for bugs / worms, then they really hate the smell / presence of human urine
If it's a rabbit just doing a bit of trial drilling, or a squirrel thinking there is something tasty below, then I would suggest a cat, hawk, air rifle or shotgun will solve the problem.
If it's a cat, then an alarm or a large dog should do it.

It def not a cat as it is a proper burrow rather than something just digging. I have a cat up there but he is a bit of a wimp so doesn't even try to catch anything bigger than a mouse. My dog did chase a rabbit the other day so it could be a rabbit. Would an alarm work for rabbits or other small mammals?

pretty sure the sound would scare any animal off....

I used one of those sound alarms humans can't hear for scaring off rabbits and it worked quite well. I needed two to cover a 20x40 arena and you need to place them relatively high up.

Is it re digging the same hole or a new one. Filling the hole with horse poo packed down hard puts them off and also putting a chicken wire fence from the bottom fence rail to just below ground level. Adds to the expense but works really well.keeps dogs out too.

STV a company that make pest control products have a sachet that you mix with water and spray down. It's a rabbit and wild animal deterrent, and they have confirmed on the phone that it is fine to use around horses..... apparently all natural ingredients.

I haven't tried it yet, I've still got a few boxes of ammo left for the gun ;)

Ha ha, you can buy packets of lion poo from Whipsnade and London Zoo which should sort pretty much anything out! Other than that, you can borrow our yard cat who is a demon with rabbits, in fact he'd bring down Wildebeest if there were any around!

I have been really interested by your replies as I have problems with animals digging in my school - the rabbits are a flaming nuisance digging right down to the membrane, next door's cat uses it as a giant litter tray, and so do the foxes who also leave bones in there!

I feel your pain :(

I have about 3 000 000 moles destroying my paddocks and lawn  Tried everything and nothing really works. I've resigned myself to the fact I will never get rid of them. Mole hill flattening has become one of my daily chores along with poo picking :( *sighs*

I hope you manage to get rid of your furry 'miner' soon, good luck!

sorry to go off topic but sunshine get some of those plastic windmill toys and stick them in the molehills - moles HATE the vibrations they make and will move out within a week or so :)

I've tried them and they didn't work :( I've tried every vibrating anti-mole thingy we could buy and nothing deters them. We employed a professional mole man who has used traps and gas pellets. It kills a few but then another one moves in to replace the dead one :( My paddocks sometimes look like a lunar landscape. Damn moles!!
