How to stop the mane being rubbed away?

Is there anything on the market to stop a horses mane getting rubbed under a rug?

My horse is out 24/7 and has a neck on her rug. I bought her a Bossy's Bib last year which helped with rubbed shoulders and the mane right at the bottom but she still lost a lot half way up.

What I really want is, like, a Bossy' bib, but a neck cover if that makes sense.

Have you tried a 'Snuggy Hood'?

They have a silky type lining where the mane goes, worked on my girl, whose main has finally started to grow...it is nearly long enough to plait again! (Also covers the shoulders, so no rubbing!)

Dont use a full neck or half neck rug. use a normal rug with a neck cover if needed. At the very least change your rug in the day, rather than leaving the same one on all the time.


You can buy hoods but they dont solve the problem, which is a seam on the rug where the neck cover joins.

I have a snuggy hood which I use most days during winter turnout, however my boy still lost a large chunk of mane. It's not clear which is causing it as I used a combo (mane was on its way out anyway) & a seperate hood too. Can't bear to turn him out without a neck cover of some sort as his head & neck will be clipped & he's a complete mudlark.

Snuggy Hoods advise not putting a neck cover over their hoods which I adhered to.

A show producer told me to keep the bits that are prone to rubs well sprayed with Canter Mane and Tail Conditioner (or similar). If the horses' mane has that silky feel, it is less likely to be rubbed out with the friction of the hood. Have to say, it has worked with mine.

This also works for horses bothered by flies in the summer, as flies won't land on anything slippery.
