Sounds daft, I know, but from day one I've asked Dax to plonk her arse on the floor for everything and now I need her to stand up for this dog show thing in a couple of weeks we're getting nowhere. :o

Managed to get this earlier:

Though I have no idea if that's correct or not and no idea how to teach it consistently if it is. Every time I introduce food she sits down and she's getting increasingly pissed off with me moving her legs about!

Please help a stoopid novice not to humiliate herself too badly. :p

Have you trained "touch"?

Thats ho we always train stand to start with. Train a hand touch and then ask for it from a sit.

Once she is standing click and reward with food.

ETA: After she is standing for the hand touch you can add the "stand" command and then fade the hand touch in favor of the voice command.

The way we are taught at training class with Darcy is have your dog sitting on your left, have treat in your right hand and your left hand on the collar. Put your right hand with treat a few inches from her noseand as she goes to get up just lift her collar slightlyand as she stands say stand and give her a treat.

I hope this makes sense Darcy picked it up quickly and makes me look good:D but she is brighter than me.

I'd use the clicker and use command and reward when she is freestanding in a position you like without being forced, like just in the yard or something.
You can also bring her out of the sit with a hand under her tummy or try teaching it on a slightly raised surface like a low table, they're more likely to stand than sit if slightly off the ground.

Stupidly I have trained a 'touch' but with the paw, not the nose. :o

DG you may be on to something there, this was kind of what I was trying to do earlier but she has a very determined sit and would rather stay sitting and howl at the treat than get up and go after it.

She also sits at the sound of a click. :o Note to self - for next dog, don't insist on a sit for everything.

Back out to the yard for round two...

Just had another couple of minutes and have perfected thus - wander around yard, dog stops approximately square... *click* AH! *treat* (dog is surprised by AH! into remaining standing and makes eye contact to see what's going on), hold for a few seconds, *click* and *treat* again.

Nothing's ever easy with this creature. :p

Are you telling her to 'stand', while she is in the position, before clicking? :p

More like "Stand - ah, no, STAND! STAND HUP! Daxy noooo" but yeah, kind of. :o

Dog showing is a silly occupation BC - just dont bother with it

I dare say this will be our one and only foray into showing, I just wanna get a nice picture and a shiny ribbon. :p

I'm not doing any with the 'oss this year or probably ever again, it's a very silly pasttime if you don't have any connections to the judge. I'm not bitter, me! :p

Horse showing is farcical at best - as someone who has an M&M there's nothing better than watching the judge frown at a pony and realise that he doesn't know what breed he's looking at. A friend of mine is much complimented on her 'Welsh sec C' at local shows - a New Forest pony that's been champion five times over. :D

It's just a shame she's all out of coat, and will probably be a prat in the ring, but I figure I have a better chance of a ribbon at this than any kind of obedience. :p Besides which we need a summer occupation, the bike has been hung up in the shed since March and our next training workshop isn't until June. A bored husky is a bad husky.

I thought u meant on her hind legs:o I was thinking BC has finally "lost it":p
My mam used to get her shepherds to stand fab for the show ring or obedience, as in stand stay from a distance (is it even called that these days):o I shall have to ask her for ya (It will not have involved a clicker though):D:D:D

Also, you can loop a lead around her belly and give it a tug with your free hand to encourage her up out of a sit or stand too (can ya tell it's the one thing I haven't cracked with Pissyhead yet...) :p

The day I post about taking up doggy dancing you have permission to put me out of my misery. :p

OH is off tomorrow so I will bribe him to bait her while we practice, will try and get another photo and see if there's any improvement. :)
