How to test for soreness

Can anybody suggest effective ways to detect soreness in back and/or bum, both during riding and non-riding? What about if soreness is only on the one side, e.g. right?

I try and am quite good,but tend to rely on an equine chiro or physio who can detect, pinpoint and then offer relief. You will need veterinary approval first,but a call to your practice will usually suffice.

Run your fingers along the back from just behind the withers using a fairly firm consistent pressure, any dipping or flinching will indicate soreness but this is only a guide, a horse will often not react to this but still be very sore when examined by a physio as they know what they are doing.
If you think your horse may have a sore back get a good qualified person to come out, if it is ok they will have no need to treat it.

Have the horse in his stable and relaxed, run your fingers either side of backbone and watch his reaction. Same with bum.
