well i've given up with my mares. Pulling it right from the root is the only way to thin it. However many people have had sucsses with this gadget and when i'm no longer broken myself I'm going to get one and give it a go! Apparently if you can get them from a pet shop they are cheaper than a tack shop as they are made for dogs too as the same product.
Just found a cheaper pink version on eBay for £15. I was worried that pulling it from the root that it would just stand up more! It's so thick that she sweats underneath it. I've got a solo comb so will give a try in the meantime. Thanks
Ive used a solo comb for years as he will not tolerate me pulling it. I then used the rake, well a combination of both. It was so much quicker using the rake but my horses mane is now a disaster zone . It is now falling on the wrong side and looks awful.
I used a tail rake for a while, it was plastic and about £8, but I can't remember where I got it from! That worked, I flipped his mane over and raked the underside so it didn't show so much if it went wrong!
Now I pull the underside of his mane with a pulling comb, except instead of pulling just the long hairs, I take really small sections of mane and pull it all out, it keeps the length and lasts a lot longer than raking!
Thanks both I used the solo comb on the underneath sections. I should be banned from trimming though as it looks abit messy but at least it's thinner I was so tempted just to hog it all off
