As per title.

I bought a horse a little while ago and long story short she didn't come with a passport (I know!).

Today the vet scanned her and the chip was from Ireland, which makes sense as the horse is Irish. So, armed with the chip number I called Pet ID/horse passport agency but nothing under their records. They advised me to contact an agency in Ireland which I have done, via email.

Is there a way I can trace the chip? A database or something that I can put the number in?

Micro-Chips are a total waste of time because there are so many different manufacturers and systems and not one central database. Also vets are not obliged to provide the micro-chipping company with the name and contact details of the owner of the horse so you may have a horse with a micro-chip but there will be no details of the horses owner recorded.

You are far better getting your horse Freezemarked by Farmkey as there is a central register and also anyone can read a Freezemark unlike a Micro-Chip.

She is registered with horse sport Ireland, but owner on passport hasn't been updated since she was in Ireland so now I need to somehow contact the bloke in Ireland who owned her to get him to confirm she is sold!

so you've found out that the original owner registered her with HSI? and shes still registered with HSI (I take it you got this information from HSI ( or the Horse Board as it was previously)? Have they given you the breeders name and address? It should be easy enough to write to him. Or if you have the sire and dam and age its easy to look up in the Horse Board foal registration books.

Just out of interest, I put the m'chip numbers of my 2 home bred and still owned by me, passported (one green, one blue) ISH registered mares into petmicrochiplookup and they came up 'unable to trace', even though they are both on HSI database and in their yearbooks......
