How To Train A Dog To Do What?

There is a little local dog show coming up and we thought it would be rather fun to take Darcy & Diesel. My daughter is working and her boyfriend said he would take Diesel and I Darcy.

one of the classes is a thrown sausage which the dogs have to retrieve without eating. Darcy would suck it up at 30 yrds but ds boyfriend said he would like to try this with Diesel so how do you train your dog to do this?.

Also what other classes are there likely to be and how did you train your dog for these.

I have tried to train for that class many times, used a lot of sausages and always failed. I have never seen a dog bring a whole sausage back, its usually judged on which sausage last the longest rather than which is retrieved. There is a similar show near here next week, there is a class for fastest recall which I might have a go at with Evie, as long as I can wave a toy at her. Other classes tend to be things like handsomest dog, dog with the waggiest tail , best condition, dog with the nicest eyes etc. Good luck with the sausage class.

Thanks MM I rather thought it was near impossible, the only thing I could think of was to feed them sausages morning,noon & night and hope they would be sick of them.

I dont think there are enough sausages in the world to keep my dog going.

CC Diesel already has a forked tongue(we believe he caught it on barbed wire). But because hes one brain cell Diesel he wouldnt make the connection.

I prefer my idea better. Now where can I get hundreds of cheap sausages

You could try teaching the 'hold' command so they get used to just holding something and not chewing or playing with it.
you could also try this:

( nabbed from a doggy forum)
tempt your dog with a treat that is even better than a sausage.

first put sausage not too far -showing dog your other treat all the while. get dog to fetch sausage and give treat.

keep repeating - putting sausage further.

Will try it with the Asda sausages, but there is a big flaw in this plan because how do I know they will be using Asda tasteless sausages on Saturday and not Tescos finest range?.

Aw am sure your dog is very clever and will pick it up in no time (and not eat it it )
I imagine they will use the cheapest sausages going, unless you stay in a well posh area, where it will be markies venison sausages

Hes the sort of dog who would always make you look a fool, but the daughters bf does love him. Every time you ask him to sit he trumps for England(Diesel that is) and he produces the weirdest noises,: I sure he does it for effect.

I've got it! Can't you secretly switch the sausage for a fake look a like, and then when he brings it back to you, quickly switch it back to the real sauage to present to the judge
