how to train her mane over when bands wont stay in!

Im trying to lay all of my mares mane over to the correct side, half of it sits over but the rest goes the other way. However, it is so thick and coarse that even bands wont stay in! i banded it over this morning and within an hour all the bands were out! and i used two bands on each section! I dont like to leave her fly rug on to long or her mane starts coming out. She has a rubbed patch at the bottom from wearing a rug all winter so it needs to grow back. any ideas?

was going to say a snuggly hoods turnout hood or similar, people seem to recommend them for horses who's mane's fall out using combo rugs etc. they're also on a 50% off offer at the moment!!

A tip I picked up from a t.v. show some time ago was to get an old bath towel, soak it in hot water (obviously not scalding hot) ring it out, then comb the mane to the correct side then put the towel over it, have to do it quite a few times but it does work, one of mine had a split mane, after doing the towel trick for a while it now all stays on one side.

If separate plaits wont work try a running plait.That way you will only need to band the bottom bit.
