How to treat feather mites?

My horse and a few others on the yard are constantly scratching their back legs on everything.Mine does have a bit of feather.I am going to try pig oil and sulphur as was told that is good for mites but just wondered how often i should apply.Was going to wash with dermoline insecticidal shampoo but think it is a bit too cold.
 
Dectomax injections. You can't get Frontline spray without a vet prescription so you may as well get the vet out to do the injections at the same time and request a prescription while you're at it so you can keep on top of them. In the mean time, clip the legs out full and wash them regularly with dilute Hibiscrub and cover with aloe vera gel after.
 
absolutely not dectomax which I don't think is even licensed for horses. Vet's don't seem familiar with side effects. ie. Laminitis. Google dectomax, laminitis, horse. You will see it has happened to others. There was one post on here a while back. I know of another in the last week who has gone into laminitis after dectomax.

I think you will find that Dectomax is not licenced( well cant find it mentioned in NOAH compendium) for horses but can be used by a vet off label which is permissible . For cattle and sheep it can be used without prescription it is POM-VPS so can be bought over the counter by cattle and sheep farmers.

What is a proper assessment of each equine? do they test for cushings, EMS to assess it's laminitis risk? Do they warn that some horses have had laminitis after dectomax so is the owner happy to use it?
 
Thanks.I have heard from too many people that the injections have done nothing for their horses or only worked for weeks so wouldnt even bother with them.The yard im at has cattle.I spoke to the vet about frontline but she said they dont have any for horses.Could i was him in this weather with dermoline shampoo or deosect if he is going to be kept warm and dry after it or is not good because the water will be too cold? I could even use water from the cattle,will just take longer to wash.
 
I try to wash my horse's feathers with Dermoline about once a month in winter and then keep in overnight till their dry and apply pig oil and sulphur. I wouldn't worry about the weather, I know plenty of people who wash their horses legs every evening and although I don't think its a good idea it doesn't seem to do any harm on the cold front. Mines had feather mites twice since I've had him and this has always cleared it up immediately.
