how to value

I have had my 16.1hh ID/TB mare for 6 years, broke her as a 3 year ild. Now 9. Won dressage at RC level, SJ points up to 1m. Hacks out, a fairly strong lively ride but no vices.
I would value her at maybe 6-8k in the current market, she wouldnt be for a novice.
However she has been diagnosed with COPD, ( by scope and lavage) manageable if she is out, just has a slight cough when ridden.
I have lost my grazing so unfortunately have to put her up for sale.
Does anyone have any idea how much COPD would affect her value?
Many thanks.

Sorry, I have no idea re: the COPD, but would say that I think you undervalue her in the current market at £6-8k without the COPD- I’m seeing horses fitting that description (without COPD) at £10k+ all day long.

I think prices are inflated at mo, ridiculously too high. Also she wouldnt really be a novice ride as she's very forward going yet sensitive.
Its the COPD that makes her difficult to value IMO, even though it can be managed she has still been diagnosed with it. She obviously wouldnt pass a vetting.

I think the issue with pricing at the moment is sellers are still valuing at pandemic prices but I don’t think horses are selling as easily or as quickly now and with the cost of living I can’t see how prices like they were in the pandemic can be sustained. I think your value without the COPD is fair as she sounds a little quirky. Depends if she can be stabled at all I suppose but 4 to 6 k maybe.

I'd be thinking more 50% reduction for COPD. Its incredibly hard to find decent grass livery so shes only really suitable for people with their own land, and that want a horse living. Surprisingly large amounts of people don't want that.

Does she still cough when being ridden? Its not totally clear from your post

Is
she the type that can live out 24/7 without metabolic issues/laminitis risk? the other factor is a lot of grass livery yards put (big bale) hay out, could she cope with that in winter?
If she isn’t without careful management, then that will make finding someone with access to the right set up very difficult unfortunately so you may have to reduce your price quite a lot to accommodate that.
If the COPD is managed is she still fully capable of full work, rc, jumping, hacking etc?

I know you say not a novice ride but if she would do RC with a competent rider I would say without COPD she’s at least £10k in this market - she’s in the golden bracket that everyone wants - right height and age, not a cob or an ex-racer. I know the market is inflated but that is how prices are now.
I would start by advertising at £5k and going from there, presuming she is relatively easy to manage and capable of full work still. If you struggle then loan maybe? People who loan are often more open to issues I find, and not all are novices.

Yes she always coughs several times during the first minutes, then it usually stops and she's fine then.

chaps89 - I always soak her hay and/or feed haylage. She has been on loan but came back as the livery was too expensive. I dont really want to sell at all, I worry that she might get into the hands of a dodgy dealer, but I have no choice.

Having had a horse with COPD I'd honestly never have another if I could help it. That being said mine coughed even hacking in walk and it doesn't sound like yours is that bad. I definitely wouldn't pay 6k, sorry!

She sounds like a really decent horse but the problem is that a decent, competitive rider which is what she sounds best for isn't going to want a COPD case.
