How to vault on?

The other day my dad came down the yard and wanted to see me vault onto the poor pony...and at 14.2 I should be able to do it...Problem is, I have no idea how.

Apparently you sort of jump with your left foot and then the momentum of your right foot will get you on? I tried and failed! Just can't get the jumpy bit in, flinging my leg is fine and I can get my foot onto his bum but...

Anyone able to give me 'instructions' for vaulting on? Or a video, that'd be even better!

And the worst bit of all this? My 51 year old, dodgy kneed, iffy backed, non horsey dad was able to vault on!

Any help much appreciated!

I've always just held the mane in both hands and 'swung' on for that kind of vault....or just put my hands on the withers/pommel and just sort of jumped and propelled myself on for smaller ponies.

God, I only wish I still could, I used to continuously vault onto my horses backs when I was young, well now, I think it would be a bit of a joke, plus seren is a bit older with a weaker back so I would not want to do it with her now.
But I literally used to try and start sprining/jumping on the spot and then up and over, used to work

I would probably do my bad back in if I tried it now

And dont give up half way lol...other wise your momentum stops dead and get stuck with your leg on his bum lol

When I can't be bothered to walk Max to the yard from his field, I tie his leadrope onto his heacollar, put one hand on his withers/neck over on his bum, I bounce "1,2,3" facing his back as if I were to get on him on the floor with a saddle, and then push and swing myself up and over. By that time he has normally started to walk off

:P.

Its fine to just fling your legs up there if your pony is standing still. If its moving it needs to be moving fast enough for you to run, that way as you run you just kind of need to jump forward with both feet together, make sure you have a very firm hold of your pony at the neck to also try and make sure you dont get left behind, once youv jumped forward you swing your legs back and then over the pony.

Heres a video to help too - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZXOL0ZDNcM

It take alot of pratice, good luck and have fun

This is how I used to do it when I was a kid. If you time it right you can also use the movement of the horse's shoulder to give you a push up there

Knowing my luck, I would trip and fall flat on my face just as my pony trots off to munch the grass.

My pony is only 14hh and I cant even get my foot in the stirrup without a mounting block.

I know....so bad!

Would love to be able to vault on. Perhaps a project for the summer.

Good Luck HattieHorse :-)
