How to weigh foals?

Okay, that must be it as I saw a livery weightaping hers . didnt realise it was a foalspecific one but thinking about it, that makes sense :D x
 
I rang Baileys earlier and they said that their weigh tape is suitable for foals, so that answers that question.

You would need to weigh the foal to determine how much wormer to give it.

By and large, those who manufacture wormers, work within a fair degree of tolerance. The foal which weighs 100kgs, will accept a dose which will suit a foal of double that weight.

Most foals, I suspect, will tolerate a 5X worming dose. Few would recommend it, but most manufacturers work on the basis, that there is a very wide margin for error, on your part!! A weigh tape is the answer.

have a look on the instructions for the wormer, when i read the one i used (think it was panacur) it said to give all foals from 6 weeks the dose for 300kg, this presumably was to ensure a good dose was used, to be fair i did also weigh tape her and she came up as somewhere near 150kg using the pony side.

i also read up that using eqvalan didnt work on the round worms at this age, and that panacur was the best option for very young foals. the mare was done with eqvalan the day she foaled so presumably that will have reduced her worm burden considerably anyway? what has anyone else done / used ?

im planning on worming her again in 2 weeks when she will be 12 weeks old, is this regular enough?

My vet advised Equimax, she says it has a good degree of tolerance and is safe for very young foals.

Safety Studies have proven Equimax® is safe to use on all types of horses. Equimax® has been proven safe in stallions at 5x the recommended dose rate and, in pregnant mares at 3x the recommended dose. It is equally safe on foals at more than 5x the normal level, and can be safely administered to foals from 2 weeks of age.

Our foal was brave and went on the scales at the futurity venue this year and he is now I would think 1/3 of his adult weight at 227kg which I was quite surprised at. Of course he could be a monster in the making, but unlikely as he is the mares 6th foal and all seem to be finishing at around the 16.2 area. Mare was weighed as well and she came in at around 670kg not in foal for 2012. Isnt it about time the worming companies right across the board start selling wormers which one syringe will do one horse as I am always messing around a bit out of a 2nd syringe. My mare is a lightweight show hunter brood mare standing 16.1! Maybe pony and horse syringes?
 
I had weight taped my foal (133kilos) and then she got weighed at Futurity (166kilos) I had been giving wormer for 200 kilos as believe it's better to give that bit more than less.

Did prove that weight tape is not accurate.
