Ah you know sometimes when you figure something out and feel like a complete idiot for not figuring it out earlier? Well, this happened to me today.

My girl has been struggling to canter on the one rein which isn't her best rein. She is ok once she gets going but I can see her tense when I ask and she kind of throws a small paddy and then canters but at a fairly rapid speed. She is quite unbalanced and its always her worse side.

Anyway, today I had a lightbulb moment! I am quite lazy so tend to use her 12 inch natural rope to lunge her with as it's there and means I don't have to faff around swapping things. It dawned on me today that perhaps she is struggling because the circle is clearly too small for her (duh!) why this didn't cross my stupid mind before I beyond me and my small brain! I swapped to a lunge line and she went amazingly. Cantered on both reins beautifully and at a good pace without any problems or paddies!

So how stupid am I?

My hubby just peed his pants at my thread re the twelve inches lol! Rightly so I think. I feel my brain needs working out more! Think being a stay at home mum for he past six years has turned it to mush!

Cortez I completely agree! Lol!

Don't want to put the boot in but a 12 foot rope makes a 22 meter circle if you don't mOve yourself at all. Most horses can canter that size fairly well, even my navicular horse (not that I do) maybe your horse is very young and its a schooling issue if not I would be looking at back and or soundness issues.

All mine go on a 12ft rope, I just leave the cantering until they are much more balanced and then only for very short periods.
