I put my trailer for sale on another forum, not really bothered about selling it but it was free - anyway I got an immediate response offering me xxx with immediate pickup. I called the number left out of courtesy and declined there offer but negotiated a new one.
She called me yesterday to say she would be picking it up last night around 8 and did i have the serial number for insurance purposes - I explained she didnt need to waste her money as it was insured until december and that she could have the original receipt with the serial numbers on when she collected it.
I had to go out of my way as she wasnt coming until 8pm normally i would be back at home in my pj's by then so took the initiative to give her a call at 7.30 to see if she was on her way - "We've decided its too much money for us she said? £2600 3yr black silver 505 with matching tack pack thrown in" She had no intention of coming but no intention of calling me either yet only 3 hours previosuly she was getting it insured??????????

My concern is up until the point of me not disclosing the trailer serial number she was keen, my thoughts now are was she tring to get the details to clone it, or steal it maybe?

I'm wondering whether to report it, as later i found her advertising several trailers

What do you guys think or had any similar experiences

hi, not had any similar experiences but I would say it sounds a bit dodgy. I think it would be best reporting it just in case the same woman has contacted other people.

I'd report it.

A friend had someone who wanted her horse box. On the phone to her almost daily. Asked her to insure it for him(!) as he wanted to drive it away. Came to see it (it's at my yard). Far from just driving it away he spent nearly an hour crawling round it, kicking it(!), and then said he didn't want it as his daughter couldn't drive it due to her age! We'd had the conversation at least twice during the preceeding week about her age and driving a lorry (it's 5.5 ton), so it was hardly news to him.

Some people are just weird, but your one sounds a bit suspect.

Definitely odd, what could she do with the serial number? I'd make sure that trailer is good and secure if I were you. You could report it, but I doubt you'd get much response (she says somewhat cynically!)

It does sound dodgy. Mind you when we got a brand new trailer last year the supplier gave us the serial number prior to purchase so we could insure. We had already paid a deposit though.

I had thought of all these maybes but again, I told her it was stil insured until December and she could have the documents I also told her she could have the original receipt. There was no reason for her to want the serial number especially as then she didnt even bother turning up?

Normally they grind off serial numbers, they wouldn't go to the bother of trying to clone one. -It's hard work to make it look genuine.

If I were looking for a trailer, I would ask for the serial number to check with manufacturer in case of recalls or worst case it is stolen.

It may be just me, but I think they were just time wasters.

Surely a cloned vehicle is mush easier to resale than one where the serial numbers have been grouned off. They already know what make model it is and its not reported stolen, maybe thieves are getting more educated

Yes, but to clone you have to put the new serial number ontop of the old one.....unless you just take their word for it & dont check the number yourself.

What I'm trying to get at is although it's possible, a great deal of effort is required to do a good job of changing serial numbers that have been stamped on.

I also think there are a great deal of time wasters out there (how many times do people ride your horse before deciding its not quite right) & this appears on the face of it (IMO) to be just that.

on the trailer i bought i asked for serial no before travelling 2 hours to go get it - reason , to ring ifor to check it was not on their stolen register (i was replacing the trailer i had had stolen & subsequently had marked as such on their register)

btw i paid £2400 for a 2 year old standard 505 so i think your price was good , sure someone else will bite your hand off

Maybe she wanted a legitimate serial number to give to someone to sell a trailer herself - hoping they wouldn't check the serial number given actually matched the one on the trailer they bought!?!? Just a thought!

When I was looking at trailers I always asked for the serial number over the phone so that I could check with IW that it wasn't stolen and was the age advertised. I would never waste a journey to view one if the seller wasn't forthcoming with the serial number.

It would be very hard to 'clone' a serial number as it couldn't be sold on as IW have their own typeface with which they stamp the trailers. This is'nt accesable by anyone else so they are able to spot straight away one which has been forged (as they did with me when I insisted on a photo of the serial plate so that I could email it to IW. Turned out that it was fake after all!).

How many potential purchasers no that? And besides as in my original post I have the original receipt and insurance documents which she could take away with her, and told her so?? Cant get much more secure than that

But in her defence, you could have been telling her porky pies. I was fed quite a few when looking for trailers, including someone who supposedly had the original receipt who then conveniently couldn't find it when I asked to see it! At least when someone has nothing to hide and reads you out the serial number over the phone so that you can check with IW, you can be pretty sure it's all ok.

I didnt have anything to hide, and she was a dealer the original receipt was here for her to take away with her. If id have been lying then she neednt have bothered taking it at all. The link to the other post shows shes as dodgy as they come so case settled, complaint made!

I know that, and I wouldn't travel to a trailer unless I could check the serial number first. Warnings about this are posted on several horsey forums I go to.
