so... i was recently at an equestrian college, and was treating some horses.

all the horses were in for most of the time. they were rugged in the stable, and rugged in the field. so, pretty much were all rugged 24/7.

at least 80% of the horses treated had discomfort around their chest and withers. in exactly the place rugs lie. the vast majority of rugs were sitting low on the chest, and were tight around the front.

now, we all know the importance of well fitting saddles and bridles... but how many of us think about rug fit as being something that can contribute to pain?

*steps down from soap box* :D

p.s. from now on, when people talk about problems with their horses, i expect each and everyone of you to say 'have you checked his back, teeth, saddle AND RUGS?'

p.p.s. i don't really :p

I'll be honest.....Ollie's simply dont. I have yet to find something big enough, that allows for a foals narrow chest (he is now in a 5'6 and growing by the hour!).
Stiggys are always a bit deep, but they do fit well otherwise. Everyone else has lovely fitting rugs, but its trial and error with different makes!

All their turnout rugs and stable rugs fit! Hate rugs that drop round their chests and slip back. My boys both fit mark Todd rugs nicely. I must admit they both have wool day rugs that don't fit as well around chest but never leave them in these, only use when in for example while I ride the other or as an extra layer with (well fitting) coolex rugs at shows in winter!
