My first mare came from a friend - she was a terrible buy! I then learnt my lesson and current super horse I bought from his breeder - he was never advertised, turned up on our yard to be schooled and sold, I tried him for the weekend and knew I had to buy him. He's perfect for me and having said he was for sale at the right price, I'm not sure he is anymore!
Song - my old tariner had him in for schooling as he was too big for his 60 yo owner breeder! ahted him at first but then i got on and he was awsome as a just broken 5 yo
Buster - through a friend that is travelling hean lad at the yard he was on, he was a usless race horse and moved amazingly so bought him from ascot sales
Gogs - turned up at the yard i was working on to be retrained, i was the smallest so rode him , then once i left the owner asked if i wanted him!
Zac - always wanted a pointer told a friend and they found him for me - rang up on the thurs and picked him up unseen and untried on the sat - not been sat on for 2 years and hes proving to be awsome - we are having our 1st canter next week!!
Freddy from a dressage dealer/rider in Yorkshire who specialised in small Hanoverians with lovely temperaments. I had seem another two of her horses before and they were also lovely.
ferdie came from an advert in the trade-it (south west free ads paper) - he was actually being sold by selina elliott, but not as an event prospect, and was therefore cheap - green and hadn't done much, plus sometimes quirky. He has gone on to be a real novice BE schoolmaster, has 26 BD points, and has completed intermediate BE too.
tia came from a friend - she runs a polo yard but was overstocked, Tia was a free gift to her, so I came and picked her up a couple of weeks later!
Bob was brought by a friend, turned out to be too green for what she wanted, o she sked if I wanted to bring him on, they found something else whilst I had him on loan, so i brought him
Goddy was on colouredcontacts.co.uk and was in Ireland. knew I wanted him from the ad, went over, liked and brought him. He was a just backed 3/4yr old
in reply to applecart14 I design and run Jock Merrimans website for him (and get our neds off him) the only reason he doesn't have many horses on there atm is due to the time of year! Will be getting more on there soon.
Oh and the weblink was wrong here's the right one
We went to look at a mare I found advertised online, fell in love, but missed the boat as she was sold before I could sell mine. Very nice eventer rang me to say she had something else in that may suit me, but it didn't sound great. Decided as we were going for our final viewing on what we thought was going to be my next horse it wouldn't hurt to pop in and have a look on the way. I didn't like it, didn't even sit on it, but fell head over heels for a far too large, far too young, far too expensive grey horse who rested his head on my shoulder and fell asleep while we were talking. Sat on him for twenty minutes and decided to buy him, without taking him xc, because he was going to be viewed for the second time that afternoon. And the rest is history!

I bought my first boy Monty, 15.2 on his tiptoes coloured cob who went on to win about £800 BSJA and even won a couple of foxhunters from the riding school I learned at. HE would jump, xc, dressage, show, even handy pony and games as well as being a fab hunter - total superstar and now living out his semi-retirement teaching a friend to be confident again.
Jack my current boy came from Ireland through my trainer. I'd gone over with him to try a few horses while he picked up a load he'd bought the previous week. I hated everything I sat on, but when we went to pull the horses he was bringing back in out the field I fell in love with this scrawny little bay thing with the worst clip you've ever seen in your life. He'd been bought to work in the school and be sold on but I nagged the whole way back to try him when we got back. I had a sit on and he couldn't even trot in a straight line, but 2 and a half years later he's won about £400 actual BSJA, still in Newcomers with only 1 DC still to get and has had his first foray into dressage recently.
Bought Barney from riding school where I went to return to riding again. Fell in love, had to have him. Bought as a happy hack, he does dressage, daughter SJ him, won loads out showing, done PC camp with daughter and loads of PC rallies, hunts like a dream. Now 15 and living the life of riley with us.
Loaned Marek from a friend at the same riding school. Little superstar.
Bought Billy from a friend of a friend. Not one of our best decisions, but we made money on him when he was sold.
Bought Bonnie from our YO who bred and broke her. Best thing we have ever done. Is a total superstar, PN with YO and daughter did intro and PC national novice eventing with her last year. She won the BEF Sports Horse thingy as a 3 and 4 year old. Totally gorgeous, moves like a dressage horse, a tiger across country etc. Total bitch in the stable but we love her.
All of our horses have come to us, we've never actually gone out and tried a horse via an advert.
Oh sorry Charlottie! Didn't realised I'd given out wrong address. Yes I have recommended quite a few people to go and see him and an old livery friend bought a horse off him too and someone else I recommended him to bought one.
I must admit I was pretty peeved though as about 5 months ago I emailed him to say my friend had just lost her horse and was looking at a rather nice horse on his website with a view to buy. The horse had caught my attention and I would have gone to see him for myself had I been in a position to buy another one. I emailed Jock to see if he could give me a price but I never received the courtesy of a reply. It was a real shame as my friend then went on to buy a very unsuitable horse from someone extremely dodgy and is now left deeply regretting her action.
2 friends of mine has bought VERY nice and very resonably priced horses (one by Gribaldi, one by King Arthur) from Simon Davies - www.sdsporthorses.com.
One, the stallion, has since been taken to grading and was Licensed.
Recommended.
FYI he also imported Rolette (was ridden by Ben Maher's) so he has proven eye/contacts for good horses both for SJ and dressage.
Have bred a few, and had a few x racer types who have all been nice.
This year i went to Frankley International, Neil Hamer and bought exactly what it says on the box. The horse is absolutely fantastic and a dream.... Belgian warmblood.
