How will? SJ/XC

As in fit? Only in so much if the horse is comfortable it will perform better.

In looks - the horse won't know the difference!

Not really sure I understand your line of questionning.

My college question was why would the tack used for this help the horse to perform better? Not the easiest question sorry..

I imagine you would be able to open the question and discuss differences in monoflap/double flab saddles, more stability for rider meaning nicer rider for the horse...

Correct bitting and differences in protective boots for example?

You could also discuss what horses wear for xc (surcingles and breast plates), which may not improve performance but make the experience safer.
So start off describing what tack you might use for sj, then the same for xc, then divide it up into performance improving and safety measures and explain why. You could also cover boots and the lack of scientific research into the support they give and how some are designed to reduce overheating of the tendons.

You could also include points about the difference in saddles. Although they don't help the horse directly, the better positioning of the rider will definitely improve the horse's performance. E.g. it is perfectly possible to jump round smaller jumps in a dressage saddle, but it doesn't put a rider in the best position therefore must hinder the horses balance. This won't affect a scopey horse on small jumps, but coudl make all the difference over large jumps.
Also the difference between flat seat XC jumping saddle and sometimes less forward cut SJ saddle. The flat seat allows for better positioning over the big drops, and for a safety seat when needed (so the back of the saddle doesn't punch you forward) whereas the more forward cut flap allows for shorter stirrups XC and therefore better balance at speed (although short-legged critters like me don't need very forward cut flaps -LOL).

I'm not sure how old you are Joshua, but would your tutor be happy that you are asking other people for the answer to this question rather than trying to think out out for yourself and doing some Google research?

I think that the question could be interpreted in a number of ways, so maybe he is just searching for ideas to include rather than the answer itself?? :)
I have been a tutor (for different types of courses) and i wouldn't see any difference to asking a forum for ideas as to another type of web search. Different if he asked for someone to write his answer, but I would guess that a google search would be just as likely to turn up right or wrong info as a forum, and believe me I have marked some horrendous answers from students who believed what was on some websites (even at degree level)!

there are worse places to ask for help with a question like that. Give him/her some credit for initiative. ;) There are some things you have got to know and all the rest you have to judge where is the best place to find out.

I'll certainly give credit for initiative and for asking in the right place, but I'm afraid it's 0/10 from me for directly asking for the answer to the question without making any attempt to think it out for him/herself first and then asking the forum if his/her ideas are along the right lines. If his/her tutor simply wanted her/him to be given the answer, then she/he would have given it to him/her her/his self, no?

I've obviously not got enough to do this afternoon :D. I must go and get the clippers out!
