Long sorry

I have recently bought a five month old dartmoor colt. He was very thin and wormy when i bought him. He has now been wormed (with advice from the vet) and is eating well and starting to look miles better. Since his arrival he has had ad-lib haylage as he would not touch hay when he arrive 3 weeks ago (He had been on haylage between being weaned and him coming to me too). He also has a little happy hoof and a few soaked high fiber cubes. He has been putting on weight nicely and is really looking much better now.

Today when looking at him i noticed that he has white rings round his hind feet. I immediately panicked that it was the onset of laminitus. He seems well in himself looks very bright and is not showing any signs of discomfort or pain. Have not been able to check for heat in his feet as he is completely unhandled and whilst we are progressing well he is not yet at the point where i can handle his feet.

Not really sure how worried i should be. I am atm waiting for a call back from the vet but was told it could be a couple of hours before i get to speak to him. How likely do you think it is that its lami? Should i be really worried or am i over panicking?

It is very unlikely to be laminitus in a horse so young. Without seeing pictures it could be hard to tell but it could just be his foal foot growing out. This can look like a ridge as baby foot is different to the foot they start to grow after a few months. I'd get your farrier out to give him a trim as soon as you can. Both my babies have had their first trims at around 6 months and particularly on the fronts there was quite a bit of foal foot to take off.
If you are really worried give your vet a call, though for anything 'foot' I call ,my farrier. :)
