The boys went out in the school for a play in the snow the other day and being typical young boys they were galloping round, bucking, rearing, biting and generally play fighting (hence not putting them in the field as there are a few ruts around) which they do all the time anyway and are normally fine as they know how far to go so we left them to it. Checked them over when they came in as saw them give eachother a few good boots, Ted was fine, however Del had a cut at the top of his hoof ... didnt get a pic of it but I find it hard to explain where it was so here's a pic I've edited

That is the same leg (outside of his outside fore hoof) and I cant really think of how he got it there .. wasnt very big but was bleeding quite a lot. Anyone have an idea how it got there? Or is there an obvious answer and I'm just being incrediably stupid

A kick from a shod hoof?

It was only him and Ted out and Ted is barefoot so I doubt that would have done it :/

Hind leg coming under from slipping and then kicking off foreleg hoof

I would second Weezy! Horses, who'd 'ave 'em eh! Lol

Funny though - see the horses at the livery yard across from us - they get turned out every morning and every morning they are hooling about in the snow, rearing up/play-fighting etc. Ours go out (they have 12 acres to fool about in!) and just go eat their hay! I even think they are now very bored of the snow and not going out for hacks/doing anything!

Any chance he could have cut it breaking the ice in his water bucket? I got some cuts yesterday off newly formed ice, I would swear ice is sharper than glass.

My mare has done exactly the same, but not sure how!

We washed it with the hose, stabled her overnight, and in the morning her fetlock was swollen and the cut was oozing puss! We wet poulticed it for 2 days and bandaged both hind legs, and for the past week and a half I have been dry poulticing it. There is still puss on the poultice, but it has healed up alot, however now there is a piece of raised skin above the cut and it will not lie flat in order to heal up. Not sure what to do now really .

They didnt have any water in the school .. were only out for 15mins at most so didnt put any out for them :/

ahhhh this has solved a mystery- Weezy I rekon that ur right. Exactly the same thing happened to my mare who was out on her own but I couldnt work out how!....if theres a way to injure themselves horses will find it!

I'm sure he would have done it with a hind foot striking the outside of the front foot. Horses do manage to do the most unbelievable things don't they?!

could be a cut from the other horse standing on him. if they were rearing and playing, then the hoof of the other horse could have come down on top of his foot causing the cut. even unshod feet can cut...x

Its an overreach, most likely when he was bucking as they tend to bring their hind legs forward more when they strike the ground before/after bucking, plus through the excitement they often have a little less control over where they place their feet.

Pus coming from the coronet bank can often be an abcess which has been brewing for a while and istead of coming out the sole tracks up the hoof wall and bursts out the coronet Hence the pus!) Just treat it like a normal abcess (lots of movement to get the puss out) and keep poulticing til its clean. It may leave a mark on the hoof as it grows down.

One of my horses routinely cuts his coronet band on brush fences so could also very easily have been done by ice.

Just an idea!

Thanks guys

Im not really too bothered that he did it, not lame on it, owner purple sprayed it after I cleaned it up, but really couldnt think of how he'd done it lol. Did think of it being an overreach but then thought I was being stupid as it was on the side of his hoof lol. He's a typical TB loon .. and if one of the three has to get hurt it will be him everytime lol
