My horse is on DIY at my yard the owner is the instructor and won't let anyone else teach there....fair enough to some degree.

But I want one of the other DIY liveries to scool my horse for me a couple of days a week, I like how she rides and the methods she uses to get him going nicely. The y/o is not particularly suitable for me horse as he is to small and lightweight for her. I also know that she doesn't like riding him because of this very reason and that there is nothing in front of her when he's naughty.

I asked if y/o if it would be okay for other livery to ride for me and she said she would be happy to do it and we can arrange it tomorrow...

I now feel like I have no choice in the matter it's either her way or no way. Am I being unreasonable thinking it's my horse I should be able to have anyone ride him that I choose....?:confused:
 
Bit puzzled that you felt you had to ask YO if someone else in the yard could ride YOUR horse :confused:

Anyway, nip it in the bud tomorrow & be strong - state you dont want YO to ride your horse. Hope you have the courage to do this, otherwise this will lead to problems in future.

Then after a couple of weeks talk to other owner who you do want to ride & ask them if they will. You could always offer to do their DIY chores for them as trade-off rather than exchanging ££'s ?
 
Your paying for livery not for any thing else. Choice of instructor or rider for your horse should be entirley up to you. She wont suit every horse or rider so its stupid to say you have to have lessons and have your horse ridden by her or no one.

On the other hand, I can sort of see the YO's point. She has the yard and she makes the rules, as long as they are the same for everybody. Presumably, she relies on income from ''extras'', thus not too pleased when somebody else, who doesn't have the financial burden of maintaining the yard, gets the ''extras'' instead.
 
I used to be on a yard where the yard owner wouldn't allow outside instructors so I left!

Your horse its up to you! Your paying for their livery service that is all!
 
I've come across this before but on a part livery not diy yard. Unless it is written into your contract or rules of the yard then you can chose who you have ride your horse. The other livery riding for chores would be a good idea if feasible then there could be no argument!
 
It is up to you who rides your horse!!
Tell YO you want livery to ride and you think she may have got the wrong end of the stick over the conversation!!

This is her reasoning which is why I asked in the first place. I feel if I tell her my horse I can do what I want she will not be best pleased. Feeling my only option is moving
 
Martlin - I can see your point but unless it was made very clear from the out set then I would be very unhappy about this arrangment and I probably wouldnt out my horse there if I knew. Most of the decent instructors round here will admit they dont get on with every horse and rider combo though so if this is the case with the YO you are a bit stuck.

That is very true and that's why I do allow outside instructors, but they do have to have insurance in place. I don't allow riding favours, though.
 
Doesn't sound as if this is the yard for you. I think it's great that there is someone there that you can use for lessons and schooling but if they aren't suitable for whatever reason you shouldn't have your life made difficult for wanting to use someone else. I think you've been very diplomatic!
 
I understand everyones point that the horse is the OP's and she can do what she wants with it. BUT there might be a reason why YO doesnt want some one else to ride the horse. Some yards have different insurance to others maybe her insurance policy doesnt allow anyone else but the owner or YO ride the livery horses. If something happens (not saying it would) whos would be at fault?
I worked in livery yard before and it was only the owner and staff rode the livery horses and if the owner wanted some one else to ride the horse on the premises i.e in the arena, the owner has to be there. This was stated on the terms of livery and it was because of the insurance policy the yard had. I would discuss it with the YO maybe her insurance policy doesnt cover other people riding the livery horses. Livery yards are great but you have to fit in to the yards routine and yard rules where as if you have your horse at home you can do what ever you like.
OR maybe she thinks that you dont think she is good enough to ride your horse. You already stated she doesnt like riding it but it still might hurt her pride and she whats to prove she can ride your horse just fine. But thats your dission.

I wouldnt be arsed with this tbh, your horse, your choice of coach/rider, YO is paid for liverying your horse not coaching and riding. I would find this set up to restrictive and would vote with my feet.

Basically, livery horses can be ridden by their owners, me, members of my staff or their instructor. If they are ridden by other liveries or their friends/family etc, the owner needs to be present, otherwise it plays absolute havoc with my CCC insurance.
Unless they go off the premises, like for a hack, then they can do as they please :)
I'm not out on any sort of power trip here, I just make sure I protect myself from litigation.

I don't actually have a contract to state any of the terms to abide by, but I can understand if it's an insurance issue although I think it's more of a money issue.

I know she can ride my horse well that's not the issue it's a case that she is too big for him or he too small for her and she knows this because she won't canter him which is where most of my schooling issues lay.

I can understand YO having a problem with other instructors from an insurance point of view, and maybe a mardy one as well, nowt so queer as horsey folk, but
anyone else like a friend riding your horse is your business.
 
I would ask the YO whether this is an insurance concern or a financial one.

My old yard would allow outside instructors as long as insured and a fee paid for the use of the school (by which time not much more ££ to get RI/YO to do it!). And 'favours' were only allowed if it was a period not covered by the 5 day part livery (ie weekends, bank hols or Xmas etc). But other livery friends riding horse was never an issue even if you werent there to watch/supervise.

As long as YOU have 3rd party liability from BHS Gold or equivalent, then the person riding is covered by that if rising with your permission. Not sure why that scenario.should be a problem for YO insurance.
 
I'm not allowed outside instructors. But its up to me who else rides my horse. I have my own insurance which covers all who ride with my permission.

It's the care, custody and control insurance that makes it tricky, because basically, if the owner is not present, the horse and its welfare is my responsibility (that is a simplified view, of course). So, if a friend was to ride the horse and the horse get injured... it could be seen as my responsibility, and I'm not happy to take that responsibility on, if I can't do anything about the choice of the friend, if you see what I mean.
