Hi everyone,

ok so here is the situation. My horse is stabled at livery yard. Now we have a good sized school to ride in, we have a couple of regular instructors who come to the yard and they book the school to do lessons so no one else can use it which is fine as the times where the school is booked is written on the notice board. Well, a showjumper who lives locally has been hacking down and using the school with permission of the YO. Sometimes paying liveries cannot use the school as this person is using school for own horses, he even brings his staff down sometimes and gives them lessons in our school! My friend had to get off her horse because said guy came in with his staff member and horses and although he said she was ok to stay (as no note was left on the board) she left because he flies is horses around HUGE jumps and its intimidating and unsafe to be riding in there with them. Said guy seems to have gotten chummy with our YO after giving her some lessons and seems to think he can just use the facilities when he wants. Not only is he not paying for use of the school (which is part of what we pay for) we have no idea if the horses that he brings down are vaccinated! His horses are not allowed to go past the horses stables because of this but are allowed to be tied up in the main section of out yard. Our YO goes out of her way to ensure quarantine for all new liveries- how this is any different I do not know. Im sick of this and i know other liveries are too. The yard we are on is quite an expensive one too and (when riding lessons are not on) we should be able to ride when we want. Sorry for the long rant! how would you feel about this and would you complain to YO??

Yep, I think the first thing you shoul;d do is speak to Y/O about your concerns. Maybe make a list, on paper or mentally so it doesnt turn into a waffle. Prepare what you are gonna say before going. If its a group of you, nominate one person to be a spokes person so its not a free for all slanging match!

Simply put - yes I would. As you say the school is part of what you pay for and you expect to be able to use it. The SJ guy should contribute towards the costs of upkeep of the school and only ride at times convienient to the liveries.

this isnt fair and id be realy miffed however yard politics are horrible and i might pause for a bit to c if someone else complains first then it wont be u targeted.

a wussy option but its an easy life

I would talk to the other liveries and see if any of them would be prepared to express their concern about it also. It's always more effective if more than one of you complain. I can't think what this YO is thinking of. I would never treat my liveries like that. So inconsiderate, and stupid. She is going to lose business if she carries on.

Agree with all other responses, this is very unfair. It will be interesting to hear the YO's response!

I would have thought that if they are competition horses that they would be vaccinated.

I would have thought this too, I assume that BSJA are as strict about horses competing with up to date vacs as any other such as BD & BE.

I think it is really unfair that he neither pays for the school nor rides at a quiet time. I wouldn't have a problem if he did it whilst I was at work for example, as this is likely to be when the yard is at its quietest.

I also understand you being intimidated whilst he is ion the school and I would not be happy aboutit.

During the winters at my old yard, we had strings of race horses use the indoor school. It used to be during the working day which wasn't a problem, but my YO got greedy and they would come up during the weekend and so we couldn't use the indoor school. Really irked me so I feel your pain!

If he is giving yard owner lessons for free, then he has paid for the use of the school and may well think he can use it as he pleases.

Ref vaccination - if you go out competing you have the same risk, so that wouldn't be a huge concern. However unlikely that they are flu jabbed as no one ever checks for BSJA (however if he is very good and jumping FEI competitions then they would be)

I'd speak to the yard owner and see if they can sort out a schedule with the guy.

I would not worry too much about his vaccinations, your horses are vaccinated to protect them against flu and tetanus, but not probably not anything else, strangles for example.
You are paying for general use of the school so he should not be there without booking the whole school [noticeboard] and really this should be at a time which will least inconvenience the liveries. Ask for a second schooling arena if the pressure on the existing one is getting too great.
I agree that no one wants to work in the same space as someone who is intimidating them you want to have fun and mess around with your friends, that is why you pay your money.
Usually there is someone on the yard who is confident enough to approach the YO with grievances, if not ask YO what is going on, and make it clear you are not the only one who has a problem with it. Best if two of you or more go to see YO, ask for ten minutes of her time, make it clear this is a "meeting"

I am not sure why it matters whether he is or is not paying for use of the menage. Either way, he's still utilising something you yard liveries want to be able to use when it's convenient to you.

YO needs to be tackled but you liveries need to discuss in advance which couple of hours per day you'd be happy for YO to be able to rent/lend the menage out without arguement coming from you liveries. During weekday mornings, maybe? Weekend lunchtimes?

OK. I think that you should approach the YO and ask that the times this person uses the arena are 'booked' on the board so that you know where you stand and can plan things accordingly.

As for the rest, sorry, but the arena does belong to the YO and she can let it be used by whoever she likes, and as for whether he pays or not, that really isn't any concern of anyone but the YO and the SJ. I don't mean to be offensive at all, but that is how I see it.

On the other hand.......you are, as you say, paying for use of the facilities and should have reasonable access, I can see your point of view, a compromise and calm discussion is required I think.

Agree with this. Ditto other comments that comp horses are probably vaccinated. I also think you liveries should get together, ask for a formal meeting with YO and nominate a single spokesperson.
Good luck

Talk to YO and let them know your feelings etc.

how do you know for certain that this chap isn't paying to use the school? have you asked him or the YO?
