How would you feel if someone was borrowing your riding hat without asking?

Haha, these stories are funny! Just seems weird to me, I don't tend to keep anything I particularly care about anywhere other than my car or home but then I am not on a livery yard. I don't mind people borrowing things I keep out at all as long as they don't get lost or damaged.

Just spray something that stinks in it they will never use it again, but why don't you take it home at night?

I can see why taking your hat home may be an inconvenience for some, as may be likely to forget it etc. Personally I leave mine in the car, but that's only because I ride with uni occasionally, and otherwise I would leave it there. I wouldn't worry about people using it though, it's a private yard, and the people at yard are friends, plus I think we all wear different sized hats anyway.

What on earth is going on in the horse world? Do people no longer buy the essentials for themselves? I do not understand why people appear to believe that others should fund their hobby

No one would borrow mine, not only is it fairly old and stinky, it is also a big mushroomy unglamorous skull cap in a size so humongous it would cover most people's eyes!

Ooh, GentleGiant I'm with you, maybe we're odd! One of the ladies at the yard borrowed mine the other day cos she'd forgotten hers. Mind you she did tell me the next day and did feel bad about not asking. It doesn't bother me at all. My sharer has borrowed it on occasions.
I end up apologising to them cos its not the most fragrant!

Alexedwards, I wouldn't want people borrowing it, I just know no one would at my yard. It's new, and an ary8 so not cheap.

I would lend it though to people who come for the odd ride, but it would be on my say so. I would be annoyed about people wearing it without asking as if they borrow stuff without asking then they probably wouldn't be as willing to inform you they'd fallen off and wacked their head or dropped it...

I'd be fuming... But mine lives in the car with me because I don't want people doing this.
My mbike helmet was taken without my permisson and dropped when someone was pissing around. I watched it bounce and told them it was an expensive mistake. It was a brand new helmet which I requested replaced.

I'm more than happy to lend mine to friends but I know that id be aware if someone dropped it or came off and can make my own decision whether it's a replacement or not. I've no idea what damage is done if someone helps themselves.

Lock it up, or take it home.

It's your hat, it was bought with your money and nobody has the right to just help themselves. It's tantamount to stealing.

There are some very ingenious ideas for extracting revenge...... Remind me not to fall out with any of you :D

Sharer kept borrowing my skull cap as never got round to buying her own. Another good reason for getting shot!

Can't see why someone would want to borrow someone else's hat. Maybe they don't actually sweat?! One of the most common topics of conversation at our yard is people trying to work out the best way do cleaning said hat!

I've borrowed Moomin1's a couple of times. Mainly to turn her mare out who can be a bit unpredictable on the road to the field.
I've also worn it for riding her mare after she's ridden if I haven't carried mine across to the school. Doesn't bother me.

My OH borrows my hat (he's currently learning) and my friends have in the past when riding old horses of mine. I sometimes shudder a bit at the thought of sweat but tbh it doesn't bother me all that much.

I don't mind certain people borrowing my hat. As mentioned above, MileaMinute borrows my hat to take my mare to the field sometimes since a bit of a hairy moment the other week when I was leading her up. My mare, someone else's head, so yes I have no probs with my hat being used in that instance without being told each time. Also don't mind if MaM uses it on other occassions.

I would have an issue if someone who I don't really know or get on with/speak to often etc was using it without my knowledge, and I would have a good few words to say. I also would get a bit pee'd if someone was constantly using my hat and it was getting wear and tear and damaged.

There's obviously a huge difference between agreeing to lend a hat & just taking one. One lady on my yard has kids that aren't into horses, but occasionally either them, or a relative/friend etc will come up with her for a ride, & occasionally my daughter has a non-horsey friend to ride. I've got daughters outgrown ones, & other lady has a range too, so between us we have a collection of various kid size hats, which we have agreed are ok to borrow. My daughter is the only one who actually rides, the others just go for a potter. So as we trust each other not to damage them, we do help ourselves, only checks are a quick text to make sure daughter doesn't need hers the rare time she's used it, as she does ride regularly. However very different to if I found out someone else was just helping themselves.

This is one thing that I would NEVER lend to anyone else. Your hat molds to your head, its a personel thing not to be put on any Tom Dick or Tw.ts head, what happens if they fall off and bang your hat !!!!!!!! You are the one that would pay the price in more ways than one. If you can not trust people not to help themselves then take it home or lock it away. Tell them to buy their own.
