You were given a horse to compete (following your own horse going lame) and the owner failed to mention that it had a penchant for flipping over backwards repeatedly?

Yes, me too!
My OH was lent a horse yesterday, and was told it was a 5yo that had never played before (polocrosse), but was straightforward and would be fine....

The first time he got on it it went up on it's hindlegs and he bailed befor eit went over... the second attempt led to it p*ssing off at high speed with him, but was fine after that.

For his second game he went to get on and as soon as his leg was over the saddle it ran backwards 3 steps and then literally flipped over backwards, landing on my OH

Luckily he was OK, and horse seemed fine and not even phased by it.
Second attempt it did the same, but OH managed to bail out and it went over backwards into someones tables and chairs...

I then spent a while leaning over it, and jumping up and down etc (like you would when backing a youngster) before he got back on... and at this point she was fine.

She played well considering, but on speaking to the owners afterwards they were bragging about how she is known for flipping backwards thorugh cars, hedges, post and rail, ditches, you name it! And that they were pleased someone else had gotten her first match out the way for them so that someone else was risking their neck!

Also... they bred her, and her mother was apparently just the same!!!! Idiots!!!!

What absolute muppets - how dangerous might that have been ?! Very glad your OH wasn't hurt, though. TO be honest, if i got on someone else's horse and it reared like that, I'd just get off (assuming I wasn't already off...) and hand it back. I'm not good enough to deal with other people's problems.

Not particularly surprised but then I only get to play with other peeps horses when they have a problem.

I used to be the same but I've given that game up now! I wouldn't have expected them to disclose rearing, bucking, napping or anything like that, but to have a history of flipping right over is something else completely!

It wasn't a vertical rear and then overbalancing backwards, it was actually a back flip!

Why on earth would they breed from a horse that flips over backwards?

Because some people are utter idiots! The same kind of idiot's who think it's funny to brag about such a horse's behaviour and then not tell the new rider

JSL, that was about to be my exact reply to AnnaandStella!

trundle - with it being a team game it is hard to forfeit the tournament for 5 other people if you decide you possibly shouldn't be riding a horse. I've been there, and the pressure is ridiculous

[/ QUOTE ]And if they then bragged about it afterwards? I.e. demonstrated previous knowledge of the horse's behaviour? I'd seriously consider litigation. It was insanely stupid and dangerous, not just to the horse and your OH but to anyone or anything it might have flipped into - children, bystanders, vehicles, other horses... I would seriously consider sending them a very nasty legal letter explaining just what would have happened if there had been any injuries.

It is a very small competition community, so the news will travel like wildfire anyway. In a sport where is is commonplace just to umpire on and play strange horses I think it will make alot of people think about what it is that they have been offered to ride...
crazy.gif
It's a shame, as when I started out in the sport horses weren't even brought on site unless they were safe for anyone to ride.

Luckily it all happened in a spacious, quiet corner of the campsite, but could have been so much worse

It was fine on the pitch, and for mounting/dismounting between chukkas - a little bit sticky but it never left the ground - which was more than can be said for Elvis!!!
Will poss be at either Liscombe or Arden, but probably not both.

Rage is booked for surgery at Willesley on the 27th.
