How would you measure a saddle?

Hello all,

I'm currently attempting to measure my old saddle so it can go on Ebay. Ive never had to measure one before so I've googled how to and apparently there are a few different ways, would just like some advise as to how everyone else would measure so I don't put the wrong size on the listing!

Straight line from centre of stud to centre of cantle and say that that's how you've done it. With the width, best to take a pic from the front with the tape measure in line with the Ds so people can see for themselves.
 
As the other poster has said, from saddle nail to centre of cantle, that is THE CORRECT way, measuring dee ring to dee ring has no bearing on the fitting what so ever and I don't know why people do it.The width of the head can be altered by the shape and style of the head influencing the fit, that is far more important so a medium in a full cut back head will have a different "dee ring to dee ring" measurement and fit than a medium sloping head and the dees are not always in the same place on different makes of saddles.Don't use that method to try to measure a saddle!
All tree makers have their own ideas of narrow,medium and wide which doesn't help either, it's just experience that tells you at a glance in person what width that saddle possibly is.

These measurements seem to be the one's that people put on saddle adverts on Ebay coupled with 3 or 4 pictures. I appreciate that these measurements aren't everything but short of a person coming to try it there is little other size information you can put.
