Pup will howl in the car through over-excitability/anticipation when ever we a) slow down anywhere near fields; b)turn the engine off or c)drive somewhere he knows.

It is starting to get louder and louder and we have no idea how to stop it. We have tried just sitting in the car untill he's quiet then counting to 100 then getting out only if he is quiet- but this is obviously not possible if you are at a roundabout etc etc.

Any ideas? Tassy is quiet- and just sits nicely and we have tried shounting no- and sitting on back seat to poke him if he starts up- again didnt work.

My sister's old dog used to wail like a banshee whenever he was in the car. Didn't matter if the car was moving or stationary - non stop howling from the start of the journey until he was let out at the end. He also had major recall issues...........

Turned out he was as deaf as a post. :(

Perhaps a hearing check at the vets might be in order, just to rule out any physical reason/s?

Brig's always been vocal in the car (never makes a sound otherwise). He's better in the OH's car and tons better since we got the pups who sit quietly. Could you borrow a calm dog? Or go a different way to where you're going? Brig shuts up if he doesn't know where we're going.

Buy a van:D belive it or not 2 clients of mine have bought vans after there dogs being here and being silent in my van (and they whale in their owner cars) obs thats not the answer, but it has obs got something to do with blocking most of their view.
I would as CC suggests try a crate and cover it completely. and put him in it when the car in on the drive for a good hour at a time and go back in the house. This just learns him as suggested by DG that he sometimes goes in the car and goes (nowhere)
Also try stuffing a kong (with something he cannot get out) and see if this can get his attention or A nyla bone (flavoured) see if you can get him chewing on something instead of screatching.

The crate idea may work if i can find one that houses two dogs- we have an estate as our 'dog car' (not allowed in the posh car as they are too hairy) so would need to be able to be either samll enough that it fits in car but with room for Tassy too OR big enough for two large dogs. :) shall take a look
