now it has come to winter he is out 24/7 unrugged with hay and a balancer. He is very very muddy but still warm and happy and as hair as a bear.

I don't think you would want him at the moment plum pudding he is sooo dirty and going through a gangly baby stage with his legs everywhere. Just roll on spring when I can give him a good groom and pull his mane etc. He looks like a welfare case at the moment.

Thank you Lippyx if you remeber he was unhandled when I bought him so got no real plans for him. He is not 3 till april and is still very bum high and gangly. I will start to long rein him and get him use to tack etc and maybe have a sit on later on in the year. I will wait till he is 4 until the proper backing I think as he is a big lad and is going to chunk out alot so want to give him time to mature.

I wouldnt let him loose anymore, his hips look like they are sticking out, or is it just the photo, bearing in mind he is also woolly?

Agree with others i wouldn't want him loosing any more so if weather gets cold and wet i would be putting out ad lib hay if not already and/or rug if poor shelter to help him not loose anymore.

Lovely horse but IMHO he has lost a bit too much and agree, he shouldn't lose any more. We could still get a nasty cold snap! But well done as he was overweight. Good luck with whatever you do with him!

You really can't win here OP! Which is a shame as you want the best for him, he will be due a growth spurt no doubt so might need a bit more forage?

thanks for all the replys. I too wouldn't want him loosing much more but bearing in mind how wolly he is i still can't feel ribs he has also just had another growth spurt. He is getting fed twice a day and getting around half a bale a day too. I will be upping his hay if he contiues to drop off he still has grass to pick at also. With how fat he was when i got him I would much rather have to add food and up his intake rather the restrict what he is having if he was still fat putting pressure on his joints. He also has a wardrobe of rugs at the ready if needs be but as i have said he has such a thick coat. With his hips sticking out I think it is more the picture. He was on a downwards slope. Thank you for all your comments though.
