I know it's a dreadful picture :( but please can you advise if my pony is over weight/ or ok?
My friend said she's fine and I'm just paranoid :).
Thanks.

weight looks fine, but is she sound because a horse that is sound should stand with its front legs perpendicular to the ground and hers are slightly back as if she is trying to take weight off? just food for thought maybe a shoeing issue. have fun

might be being stupid here but if her front legs are slightly back surely that means she is putting more weight through them not less?

Hi Beeswax, Yes she is sound :) about four years ago had surgery to have her annular ligamnet cut and after a long battle she is sound thank god. Other than her arthritis in her back legs (shes 17 now). An interesting point though. Shes a nightmare at getting her photo getting her to stand straight/square so I hope thats all it is :D.

Weightwise I'd say she's fine, but personally I'd like her to have more muscle on her, particularly her neck and hindquarters.

Thank You yes I agree have not really done much schooling for a long time and we only really hack now. It is something I would like to improve.

Thanks to everyone who said shes lovely :D. Shes a fab mare but not very photogennic lol.

Agree with Amymay nice condition but definately needs some flabby bits turning into muscle...don't we all!!;)

She's like my fella, always looks grumpy and miserable on photo's!!

Thanks guys :). How is the best way to tone her up? She hacks out every other day! She's very lazy and hard to get going. We don't have a school I can hire 1 but it gets a bit expensive to do that too often.

Work, work and more work.

TBH I've never used a school to fitten my horses - and have always done it on the roads, or generally hacking about.

Why not develop a fittening programme??

So walk, walk, walk.

Walk, trot, walk.

Trot, trot, trot (introduce some canter work)

Trot, trot, trot (more canter work and faster work)

Before you know it you'll have a toned and fit little horse on your hands.

Took 5 weeks of intensive work to get my lardy boy fit! He's hacked out alot all year. To get him really fit though we did mainly hacking..but proper hacking as Amymay says, good working walk for a week, followed by alot of trotting for a week then introducing some canter work. This combinded with schooling twice a week, jumping once a week and as I'm lucky to live by the beach once a week of good fast work on sand and water.

Went from this..fatty with dropped bum (excuse the mad dog...)

To this, stupidly fit and energetic horse...so much so he scared the c**p out of me so my friend got on him!! (Said friend is now constantly trying to steal my horse from me!!Lol!!)

Wonderful photo's jsr.

What a handsome chap.

OP - your horse doesn't look fit, and lack of fitness will (may) result in lethargy.

Hill work! Riding up and down hills for a while a couple times a week really helps build muscle. Made a world of difference for my girl
