How's this for too close for comfort?

I was literally about to post about this, had a close call myself today with a huge lorry, they came towards me without at all slowing down and I think they were going about 40mph. Some drivers are just so inconsiderate.

Agree,he's left hand drive so no excuse that he could not see her or the horse.
On her post on facebook there's some dipstick saying they have no sympathy as she deliberately chose to ride on a busy road, unbelievable attitude!
Glad you were ok AmberThePony.
I would not ride on the road or cycle on the road, it's too much for my nerves!

He did however go past quite slowly . Not great I admit but compared to a police car that recently hooned past some kids from our yard ,in the village high street ,with blues and twos going, this lorry driver is a saint

What a ****! I was out on Boy Wonder today. Forgot it was bin day, one bin lorry was very kind and careful, older driver. The other didn't even acknowledge i was there. And was way to close! Had it been Winnie i'd be off!

Yes seen this on FB too, found it really bizarre that a driver would go by that slowly but so close - brilliant horse & rider though!

It's so hard riding on the roads these days and I do tend to find myself riding much more defensively. I prefer to place my horse a good foot of more from the gutter to discourage those that think there is room to just squeeze by, in days of old I would have kept close to the kerb but not these days.

Seen this on fb and every time I watch it my teeth itch.

That horse is an uberstar!

I can imagine just how badly this scenario could have ended and it makes me feel sick.

When will people get their ass in gear and find a cure for stupidity?

that horse is amazing! I know experienced school horses who would have lost their MINDS at that.

Some people have no bloody patience :P not to mention consideration. Ridiculous driver.

That blooming car on the other side of the road stopped him from moving over. The white one.

^^ this ! To be fair he was going slow but instead of stopping and waiting for her to pass the white car so he could overtake safely the twit passed through both of them!

Those of you who ride on busy roads have my admiration and how good was her horse - an absolute saint!

Lorry driver is an idiot clearly. Not sure what the white car was doing but in that situation I would have moved into the middle of the road and trotted past the white car to prevent the lorry passing. I appreciate it is unbelievable that the lorry did it and the rider did nothing wrong but I have found cowering on the verge does make it easier for idiots to take over the road.

Even passing a pedestrian that close would surely be driving without due care?

Great she had a head cam on.

From the video, it looks like they are going up hill? I imagine that it would be very difficult for a large, laden lorry to stop on a hill and then get going again. I would presume that it is continuing up at the slowest possible speed that it can still keep its momentum going.

In that situation, the white care should have kept going (as it had right of way) and the rider should have trotted on up the hill. As she said, it was only a few metres to the next turn off, so she would have at least known that there was somewhere for her to pull off.

I agree with pixie, trotting on would have been sensible and probably avoided the lorry squeezing past.

Drivers should be patient, but consideration cuts both ways.

Eek! What a good horse. The alternative ending to that scenario doesn't bear thinking about. Why on earth the white car stopped I have no idea - people are idiots - it's like when people slam on the anchors when they see a vehicle on blue lights - causes way more hassle. It's a real pet hate of mine.

I didn't really understand why the white car had stopped. However that didn't mean it was ok for the lorry driver to try and pass through the gap uphill or not!

My horse hates lorries so i am always looking for laybys and stuff to 'hide'in. This video has made me even more paranoid about doing so! why is the white car just sitting there though? Obviously the lorry driver did a stupid impatient thing but if the car had just drove past normally there would have been room to overtake in a couple of seconds

I get this with other drivers all the time when I am towing a large trailer. Car drivers just freeze and can't think who has right of way, can't work out widths of their vehicle or mine.

Often they will stop in a totally unsuitable place to pass and flash me on, when when I've already stopped in a good place to pass and flashed them on!

I reckon the white car thought it was helping when clearly it wasn't. That's why vulnerable road users have to "own the road" in a situation like that.

Me too. A cyclist friend told me that female cyclists are more likely to be killed/injured in road incidents and research has shown it's because they don't dominate the road. Male cyclists are more likely to force other drivers to take note of them. This made me think about the way I ride on the road and I definitely take up more space than I used to, especially on a straight stretch of road like that one. It's bit more tricky round twisty bends as a driver doesn't want to come round a corner to find a horse in the middle in the road.

So many drivers just stop when they see horses coming towards them, thinking they're being helpful. I will always thank them as it's better than them charging past and they do mean well but you're right, it's not always the best course of action. It doesn't excuse the lorry driver at all though. The bit that got me is that she said he turned right just up the road. The hill therefore won't have been an issue (not that I think it's a valid excuse) as he will have been slowing down for that anyway. Waiting for that would have cost him about 10 seconds!

What an amazing horse. She should use this video as a sales pitch if she ever wants to sell him!

I watched this clip last night and my heart was in my mouth. Frightening. And to think B took offense to a crow drinking from a puddle whilst I was riding yesterday, I'm not sure we'd have the same outcome as that on the video...

Not a jot of branding on the lorry, which is a shame. The company he works for ought to know how they are being represented.
