AFter Going to HOYS over the weekend i had the great displeasure of taking my camera.....

this does not happen often.i discovered that they had banned members of the public from using there cameras!!!

obviously i thought i would take it and see what happens.

so after taking a few images i was asked to stop.

however on the other side of te arena people were using cameras in front of the stewards!!!....
also see enc pic

the hon President was using her camera. sseveral other people where also using there cameras all the way thruoghout the evening.

so my question is

Why should the general public be banned from using cameras yet if you have the option of being priviliged you can do so with impunity(i did mention this to a door supervisor and he said " i will pass this across"....) nowt happened so ..

anyhow if others got lucky my images will be on flickr under the same name as is on here.(not that there are many tbh as i was to annoyed about this)

thanks

Aah, the joys of HOYS. Can i join in the rant? A few years ago one of my pupils was in the first ridden class at hoys. In the scheduled warm up in she went to ride in her pony amongst all the other ponies in her class - ALL OF THEM being ridden by adults, with varying amounts of leather strapping/gags/gadgets. One pony was ridden for hours and hours on end, the connections changed its bridle number a few times in their efforts to disguise what they were doing!

At this point i lost all illusions i had of HOYS being a display of the best horses and ponies in the country supported by top class horsemanship. Your example doesnt surprise me either!
Disgraceful hypocrisy.

Wouldn't you be annoyed that you were stopped from taking photos but people with 'privilege' weren't ? Surely if they had a decent enough argument for why you couldn't take pictures it would have to apply to everyone ..

extract from the press office i got last week....

"Thank you for your email.

The use of cameras and other filming or recording equipment is strictly prohibited in the Arenas at any time."

that is all it said

Nailed I think thats the point The Only Madman is trying to get accross is that they tried to take pictures but were told off by the Stewards and they couldnt or get risk of being thrown out. And seeing the President taking photos was just a smack in the face, one rule for one and one for another! And without the paying public there would be now show at all!

Ha, I loved your post. Yes it is hypocrisy in its wildest form! How unfair, I too would have been annoyed. I've taken photos in an arena before now with my camera phone, I agree with the extortionate cost of tickets, people should be able to take photos.

I would never pay the ridiculous price to gain entry at HOYS. I get much more satisfaction from watching the top riders compete at my local riding club's premier show once a year, and watch them in the collecting ring which i find even more satisfying TOTALLY FREE OF CHARGE. The buzz from being up close and personal and getting to chat to them if you want is worth more than sitting from 50 rows up in the dark at HOYS!!!!

Well we were there on Saturday night and all they asked was not to use flash photography. Loads of people still ignored this. We were taking photos without a flash and it was perfectly fine - stewards said nothing.

Oh, and no we were not in the "posh section".

Where you using a flash? and was the president?

Ok must have had the section where the stewards were not enforcing it...

no i have an Canon Eos 450d. do not need flash

i saw the flash go on her camera several times

and behind her there was some young ladies who used there flash often....

That's not on then!

We were seated in the corner to the left of the commentary box if you were facing from the collecting ring. Loads of people were taking photos and recording stuff on their mobiles. We were litterally 4-5 rows back from 2 stewards so clearly visible they said nothing to anyone even those using a flash.

Generally when I am told no flash photography I take that as an OK for using a camera so long as I turn the flash off. On the screen before the classes it said no flash photography so we thought it was OK.

sods law

actaully our one said no photography.

but i was annoyed by this point trying to dodge the stewards. but it meant the shots i got are no that great so ruinedt a nightout.

think i will try and go to Oylmpia

they havnt banned non flash photography

I thought you were allowed to use your camera aslong as you didnt use flash?

I was there saturday night i heard them say no flash photography and was suprising how many people still did use it.

I can understand them not wanting you to use the flash but with the price of the tickets i would have thought it would only be fair to be allowed to take some pictures of the show.

I was there Sunday night and there were flashes going off and people using mobiles.
I'm glad I won tickets because the lack of atmosphere was unbelievable. I will not be going again.
Oh for the glory days of Wembley in the 1970's.

Lol funnily enought we won our tickets also but we paid a bit extra to move forward

but prefer olympia tbh

and the door supervisor did squat about the flashes going off
except where we was sitting.....

We were there and there were signs at front rail in big red letters saying "strictly no photography allowed".On Friday we were seated on opposite side to Saturday and think some stewards were just more zealous in following the rule.At one point friend got told to stop taking pictures(she wasn't using flash)
After reading back of ticket it did say they could confiscate camera.
Forgot to add yes think its hypocrisy!!But doesn't suprise me

Had a response from the press office.......

Thank you for your email and for taking the time to send us your feedback.

We are sorry if you were disappointed that the no photography rule was not enforced fairly. It has always been our policy that - The use of Cameras and other recording equipment is strictly prohibited in the Arena's at all times. There are a number of reasons for this and include competitors complaining about visitors using flash photography, Sky's recording rights and the fact that we have an Official Competitor Photographer. Each year we have numerous complaints about people using cameras, predominantly flash, and the no cameras rule is used to minimise these issues. As much as we would like, it would be unfeasible for our stewards to police every visitor who is taking photos, especially when using flash. However, this issue will be brought up with the NEC in our intense debriefs so that the stewards with be fully addressed about the issue for next year's Show.

However, I can inform you that the notice was displayed on the big screen on a loop, on the tickets as well as on the Visitor and Competitor information leaflets, on the HOYS website and was also read out to the audience by the commentators on a number of occasions.

I hope this answers your queries, and thank you again for your feedback.

Kind regards

We got shouted at (yes shouted, not asked as adults should to other adults) by one of the ushers for taking pictures and yes I could see the suited and booted snapping away happily, without, "put your camera away and stop taking pictures now" being balled at them across the arena!
I realise now I shouldnt have been taking pictures (I didnt know at the time due to the amount of flash photography that was going on around me) and a simple, please and thankyou would have sufficed. Possibly they believed that on our little 2 bit phone cams we may have taken the pic of a lifetime and sold for lots of ££???
