To look out for? :D What classes did you watch if you did go? We're going Sunday and are sat in the Exhibitors area... so interested to know how the viewing is ;) :D

I went yesterday!

Watched M&M Section A and Section C
All the Search for a Star Classes
Heavyweight Hunter
Champion Hunter
Champion M&M
The SJ Amateur Champs
The SJ Newcomers
The knights of middle England Display
Fredric Pignon
Both rounds of the mounted games
The Scurry driving

I think that was it!!!

I looked round the shopping but didn't buy anything as there isn't much I need until I find a horse. So I can't really comment on whether there were any bargains.

Not sure about the viewing from the exhibitors area as we were mere riff raff!!!

Oh and watching the search for a start classes was really interesting as the judges gave a bit of a commentary on what they were doing so well worth going along. We watched them because a friend was riding in one of the classes but I would suggest anyone going tries to find time to watch these classes.

Highlight was probably when one of the judges said she would like to have seen the rider looking a little less colourful, and then quickly pointed out that she meant her clothing not her face!!! :D

i went. yes their were some bargains. i spent £200 and bought alot for it. i got a genuine sheepskin half pad for £34 instead of £55.rydale have good offers as usual. i watched the S4AS riding club show horse and then went in and watched the evening performace which consisted off a few showing championships, newcomers senior sj, scurry driving, mounted games, frederick pignon. (i thinks its frederick? its the first time hes performed in the UK) and the last class was the 7 & 8 year olds. didnt see the jump off for that as it was 10:30 and i was very very tired.

Ah ok, you're not much use ;) :p

Nope I'm useless and rubbish me! :p

Interesting re. the SFAS classes :D

Did you see the winner of the SJ amateur class go?! :D :D

Yes I did, a really exciting finish! Thoroughly enjoyed that class.

We couldn't stay up late enough for the 7&8 year old class either!

What did you think of Search for a Star? I was a bit shocked by the number of refusals.

Was the winner a late JO then? I know Di quite well and was thrilled she won, just gutted I couldn't go and watch! :(

Interesting re. the no. of stops in the SFAS... nerves I guess :)

we watched the 7 & 8 year olds first round and that finished at half 10 and they were just setting the course for the jump off.
yes i was surprised at the number of refusals aswell. and all the horse seemed like show huntery types, i would have expected more of a variety for a riding club horse class.

Yes there wasn't much variety in there, the one we went to support stood out a mile as being pretty much the only one that wasn't a show hunter/riding horse type and it was commented upon by the judges. I thought there would be a wider variety in that type of class.

I hope that it was rider stage fright but a lot of the riders completely failed to ride the money fence and got refusals as a result, even after one refusal several came back a second time with no leg on and "let" the horse stop again. I guess the pressure and atmostphere caused them to freeze but it made me wonder how much SJ/working hunter/hunter trials those horses did in real life that the fence caused so many problems.

Felt so sorry for the girl who fell off, she must have been devastated. The poor thing.

I'm off sunday daytime, first time going to watch HOYS so very excited. I'm on the lookout for a bridle for my boy particularly with a plaited leather browband!!

The jump off was pretty tight and each subsequent rider shaved more time off the clock.

There was quite a big jump off, and someone took the lead fairly early and looked unbeatable for a while, then several riders in a row came in and just knocked more and more time off where it didn't look possible.

Di REALLY pushed it, absolutely nailbiting to watch as it was either going to be an amazing success or fail in a big way. It was bravely and boldly ridden, not pretty to watch but very exciting. She was perhaps 3 or 4 from last if I remember rightly.....

was that the little grey cob. yes i think nerves got to some of them. i think the girl that fell off was the only one who really tried to ride the fence and the horse just said na ah!

I am so jealous. This is the first year we haven't gone since it moved to Brum. We only live down the road and my hubby has said I can't go as my horses need rugs and I can't keep shelling out willie nillie lol...I tried the "I can get them cheaper at HOYS" line but he just said NO!

My eldest is there with college today though so I hope she will remember to get photos and bargain hunt on my behalf...

there were some good rug bargains their! show him this thread so he can see. last year i got a 350g for £35. i didnt get any rugs this year but their were alot of bargains around!

That'll be right! Ironically she was struggling to be quick enough in the qualifiers, as she works on nice smooth JO's ;) But I guess if you're going to push it anytime, HOYS is where to do it ;) Limerick is a big mare, so not really built to be "nippy" I guess!

Sounds like it was an interesting day all round :D I can't wait to go on Sunday :D

Yes it was the little grey cob! Bless her she was a good hand smaller than the others, such a shame she rolled a pole in the jumping.

Well she picked the right time to pull it out of the bag! The pressure obviously worked for her.

This is making me excited for going on Saturday!! I really need to cut back on how much I spend though! I normally go slightly crazy. All I am after is a new set of boots for my gelding. (Let's see what I come back with though :p)

i commented on how sweet and obedient that little cob was. perfect riding club type in my opinion!

Yep as a "grass roots" riding club competitor, at a normal club show I think I would rather have had a pole jumping and had a polite obedient horse than been sat on the winner who refused to stand still, barged other horses whilst standing in line and threatened to rear at least once. I think being normal and manageable is important in a riding club horse!

I was there yesterday too. Got a couple of bargain rugs from the "swish" stand. Could have spent a fortune tho!

I watched the sfas classes too. I thought to cobs were a really strong, some lovely horses in that.

I have to say I was shocked at the riding club horse. The grey cob was very sweet, it was a shame he knocked the first pole and I did like the coloured but was really shocked at the amount of refusals. It was shocking! Also I have to say I think too many of the horses went really badly, ewe necked, not soft and round at all, incorrect bend etc. I do understand it is a big big occasion but I think the standard was quite poor this year compared to previous years.

Not sure if anyone else agrees but that's my thoughts....

Yep agree!

The grey cob was the highest placed that had jumping penalties and she was 4th. Only three went clear. I think had she jumped clear she may well have won because she gave the judge a really sweet ride and they seemed really positive on her conformation and trot up etc.

I was very shocked by the standard of some of the others. Both the horses and the riders to be honest.

The cob class was much stronger, but there were a few lessons in ring craft needed. The trot up was particularly poor, the judges commented upon the lack of space some allowed, but some of the horses could have done with practicing too, they didn't seem to know what was expected.

Thought the coloured who won was very nice though, in fact I would have happily taken any of the top 4 home with me.

YAHOO!!!!!

I'm off in an hour to go pick my mother up and off we toddle - 3 nights in a hotel, Fri watching the coloureds, Sat the cobs and shop shop shop.

So gerrof them bargains they is all mine!!!! heh heh heh :p;)

Unless of course whatever it is wouldn't fit a hulking great 16.2hh maxi cob in that case I'm happy to share!
