HOYs First Ridden Qualifiers

Can any experienced showing bods explain what happens in a HOYs first ridden qualifier. Are there usually two judges? Are the ponies stripped? Many thanks

Yup 2 judges - one for ride one for conformation. Normally they don't strip the ponies and instead get the kids to ride them in walk away, trot back. Some judges do strip though so be aware of this but it is not the norm. The groom can enter the ring when all ponies are lined up normally.

First Riddens are stripped in HOYS qualifying classes. Do you have a plaited or an M&M? Has pony got a valid height certificate?

Yes, the child does trot the pony up. Plaiteds are always stripped at qualifiers, (unless there is a health and safety issue!) I'm pretty sure the same goes for Mountain and Moorlands.
My mum is a big breeder of plaited first Riddens and has had a few places at HOYS.
I have 2 daughters but am embarrassed to admit I've hardly encouraged them to ride, despite them having a riding pony and a section A! I've vowed to do more with them this season!!
Do you have a section A and how old is your jockey?

Haha - sounds like you've the right idea! My daughter was 11 years in May. She was in to jumping but since buying a nice little section B has become more enthusiastic about showing.

In the 5 M&M FR HOYS classes I have done they have never been striped but the child rode for the trot up. Might just be a Scottish thing then!

I've been a steward at a fair few now and can only think of one occasion where they were stripped, every other time it's been walk away and trot back with kid on board.

8. In the Final at HOYS riders in Lead Rein and First Ridden classes will not be asked to dismount; the ponies will not be stripped; however they will still be assessed for conformation. At qualifying shows First Ridden ponies will be stripped unless on health and safety grounds it is unsafe to do so. This will be agreed at the discretion of the organiser and judge. - See more at: http://hoys.co.uk/news/horse-of-the-year-show-qualifying-show-rules/#sthash.TOj93dup.dpuf

From the HOYS website :)

OP - how is your sec. B bred? We used to breed Bs at home too!

Edited to say - maybe Scottish shows are more 'unsafe' EKW ;)

Catroo - bog standard FR classes are not normally stripped but HOYS classes normally are - as above.

I steward HOYS classes - I assume most shows use the H&S clause, it also speeds things up when you have 20+ ponies to get through

Thank you everyone. He's a Gipsyville pony by Stoak Tudor out of Dawns Princess. He's our second Gipsyville. We had to sell the first one due to emigration but they've both been brilliant. Quirky though!

I quite like the Gipsyville ponies. We currently have a Templedruid Sec B who is only 12hh so he gets trimmed and plaited up as a SHP.

I loved Stoak Tudor, he wa such a lovely stallion. Which qualifier are you doing? You must keep us posted :)

I once saw an M&M first ridden class of goodness knows how many ponies stripped, it took forever! I think it's safest to be prepared to strip (the pony!) and be pleasantly surprised if you don't have to

There is a thread running on the Horse Gossip forum about lack of in hand presentation when trotting up, makes interesting reading about how points can be gleaned with a bit of presentation savvy

I have a Stoak pony (Stoak Tudor is his great grand sire) but he has gone the other way and will be a tall boy so no FR for him! but I have recently trimmed up my sec A to be a hunter pony type which I think was a good move

Thank you for all your replies. I'll take a look at the thread on horse gossip thanks for pointing that out. We'd love a full up 13.2 welsh B related to Stoak Tudor. My daughter is great at in hand and has recently won against adults in WPCS welsh B gelding classes with the pony Prince. I'm
not holding out much hope but we'll have a go and hopefully enjoy the experience.

Ohh Templedruid fan here :) Our family pony part bred ride and drive super star is one of theirs and the stud come to watch him compete. Have friends with their As and Bs too :)
