Hi there,

We are very jealous of the equestrian fans who have been able to get up to the NEC in Birmingham to watch this years' HOYS.

However, for those of us who were not so lucky, has anyone been able to watch the coverage on Sky Sports? Or anywhere else?

Do you think that our National media does enough to publicize our sport? To make it more accessible and enjoyable for the general public?

Would be very interested in your thoughts!

Thanks

It has been on Sky Sports 4 since Thursday - twice today 2.00pm and 8pm.

No the national media are not covering enough - infact the coverage is shrinking. The BBC covers less and less. Racing is enjoyable but it is not the only equestrian discipline worth watching.

I have pals who wanted to watch HOYS but are not Sky subscribers. IN these days of Sky plus etc you cannot even give them a video copy!!

i think it should be accesable (sp) to those on freeview, but overall i think coverage is good. I think you can watch it online also ?!?

IMO the coverage is pants. We have sky but not the sky sports package as its simply not worth paying for it for the very occasional equetrian stuff they have. H&C TV should cover this sort of thing. I dont think it should be available just on freeview as we've tried it and get no reception here so it doesnt work!

I've not been able to watch any :(

It is sad that the coverage for equestrian sports on tv has declined over the years, but I am impressed that not only have sky sports shown HOYS nearly every night, saturday and sunday is to be shown 3d. I am pleased that the upshot of marrying a techno-geek means that we have a 3d tele and therefore have to have the full sky package. The down side is that I have had to sky+ it and will watch it when he is out!

TV coverage has been in serious decline for a number of years now, it used to be all over the newspapers etc when riders like Harvey Smith were at it.

Do we maybe need a really strong public figure?

We have riders like Ellen Whitaker, beautiful, young, talented, engaged to a film star, but maybe that is not enough??

We even have a royal riding in the public eye!

I really wanted to watch it, bit don't have Sky :( I would have liked it to have been on the red-button or something, even just some highlights would be nice!

An Idea.

There are millions of horse riders in the UK.

Why don't we join forces for a mass TV switch off for something prime time like East Enders or Strictly.

We all need to do it together for a certain programme at a certain time and let the world know we will do it. Also DON'T VOTE.

(Yeah no smart replies to say 'you are in France'. I still watch the BBC.)

I wonder if in 2012 the equestrians do well will they get the media coverage, I expect not.
We won gold at dressage recently did it make the news. No In fact the newspapers ignore the results.
Having a warped mind I just hope that we do well and win gold in any of the equestrian disiplines and no other and then see what the hacks in the media make of it.!!!

I think part of the problem is that the existence of Sky has warped the cost of buying the rights to sporting events. They have so much 'buying' power due to the revenue they generate that they can easily out bid terrestrial channels for anything they want.

The BBC have an award winning grand prix package and yet even some of that is being surrendered to sky as the beeb can not justify using so much of their license fee money on buying up sports rights.

If it was still relatively cheap to buy the coverage we might see more of it on poor man's telly.

If we can't even watch our home football league for free( I know some of you may not like it but I do as do many many millions of others), which is the national sport basically, then there is no hope for a minority sport such as equestrianism.

We could all have a Sky boycott but even that wouldn't help because they operate in so many countries.

I am getting sky sports next month to watch the premiership and the Grand Prix. I guess the horses will be a nice side effect. If you can't beat em, join em!

Same! It is a shame that there was nothing at all for people that only have freeview, I would have liked to have seen some of it! I like Rollin's idea but I'm not sure how easy it would be to do. It's a shame that there is less and less equestrian sport shown on TV now or even publicised at all in the news.

It will certainly be interesting to see what happens to our sport in relation to the public following the Olympics.

I do not want to jinx it but, we have some really strong teams going forward and surely we will be able to collect a few medals???

I wonder if our sport will change and if we will be able to get the public more involved with the horse world....and will this be a good thing?

Agreed, but not SCD, please, I like that! :o

Interesting point about Sky and their buying power being able to outbid everyone else, hadn't thought of it that way before. I do agree that H&C should have better coverage of such events, if not live (which I'm guessing their budget is just never going to stretch to) then at least the next day or something, not like it would cause much disruption to their schedule that seems to consist mostly of repeats... As I'm of the erm younger generation I can't actually ever remember being able to watch HOYS on tv, though I can remember Olympia used to be on BBC as watched it down at yard when we were quite but in recent years seems you can only get it on Eurosport (which I can get)

Would love to have Sky Sports but as most of the stuff on it is football ( which my hubby and I loathe) it seems a waste. If they did pay as you go then - yup we would definitely go for it. Shame it's not BBC as it used to be,

Maybe now the BBC are saving money not showing all of the grand prix's that they can now show us some horsey events!! I'm actually pretty sure there is more people who would watch a horsey event to the grandprix anyway

I'm pretty sure there aren't!

The only way you'll see more sport on the BBC is if we all pay far more in terms of license fee.
