I cant believe the Supreme Horse Champion- out of all the stars at NEC this year and they chose a coloured cob???? Now i love cobs but a coloured one?!

This is not the way to go IMO!!!

Nothing wrong with coloured and if it was the best then it deserves it.......

Its the fact out of all those hudnreds of fantastic horses in the country and the judges choose a coloured cob? Clearly no one agrees but i jsut think its madness!

I think it is brilliant that a coloured horse won - (would have prefered a Cleveland but hey ho they don't have a class!!!!)
My first pony was a coloured and when we won best turnout, ridden etc I heard those sort of comments, thought we had moved on over the last twenty years!

Thank you Santa - the HOYS website kept crashing on me.

What an absolutely stunning animal!!

Quite frankly it wouldn't matter if a donkey one the Supreme title - if it's best in show, it's best in show!

Well it must have improved out of all recognition cos when Patches, Harley and I saw it at South View, it was the ugliest bad moving thing on earth, we all laughed at it; nobody liked it at all - and I like coloureds!

Just goes to show what lousy judges we are!! Humble pie for tea anyone?

Does it look odd with black hooves? Our horse has 4 white legs and all her hooves are cream with stripes! Do the show people paint the hooves black or is this natural? I think it looks very strange!

but a bit of corrective shoeing etc can make it appear straighter and a bouncy cushiontrack arena can make most paces look bigger

I must say when watching the cob championship I did pick it as my winner from the four. I did see a few of the other champs but I am awful at comparing different breeds/types especially when not side by side. But So Smart looked good, produced a very good gallop (in the cob champ at least), very importantly in my opinion behaved and generally looked the part. But please note I know very little about showing as Sj and Dressage are more my type of thing

another photo of him on his lap of honour this time!

What a lovely example. Really looks a nice correct animal, and if it performed correctly on the night, why not?! If you took its colour away, IMO it would still be a winner as its a good cob stamp.

He can't get much more leverage on that curb can he?!

Have to say, it still doesn't grab me; it's front end doesn't match the back end (to me!); imagine that tanking off with you, you wouldn't have a chance!!

no think more he just had very long reins as it didn't look like it was about to p*ss off with him or anything in particular!

To be fair to RW, even though I detest the bloke, there isn't much that would dare piss off with him I'm sad to say!

(to original poster - i used quick reply)

You do not specify whether it is the fact that it is a coloured, a cob or the combination (ie bay/chestnut etc etc cob would be fine OR coloured, say, sports horse would be fine) which offends you.

Now i personally am not a cobs fan - i would never own one - and therefore, although i quite like coloureds (very dependant on markings....love some hate others) i am not really a coloured cob fan either!!! have to say though that this one is quite nicely marked!

HOWEVER i can appreciate a good example of all types of horse (even arabs which i really don't like!!!). The horse was, in the judges opinions the best horse in the show and therefore it wouldn't have been right for anything else to win - at a show you pay to get the judges opinion on your horse, HOYS being so prestigeous will have picked judges that they regard best capable of assesing ALL the horses and selecting the best - So do not say they were wrong - there is a reason that they were judging at HOYS and you were sat watching it on the TV.

and as i said i am not even a cobs person but please learn to appreciate quality in all it's shapes and forms.

Also, just to point out (and this is also the reason am quite angry)......These people have poured their soul into preparing this horse, getting the turnout on point, keeping it sound etc etc, it has all just paid off - they probably had the best weekend of their lives just for people like you to say it shouldn't have won. (not that they'd care because of course they can just shove the prizes in your face) but really who are you to say it shouldn't have won - can you do better? no because that horse won. can you judge better? no because you would have been invited to judge. It is not like the horse won at a sh*tty local show and was the best of a bad bunch judged by hill billies - IT WON AT HOYS WITH JUDGES WHO WERE REGARDED TO BE THE BEST!!!!

To the person that said it can't move - i have never seen it move - only seen stills of it - i am speaking generally and i trust that the judges did a good job and it is a fabulous example of a cob.

Is that really the horse from the demo at South View?? Blimey!!!!

So I wasn't alone in being shocked at the difference then; that's a relief! Never in our wildest dreams would anyone that night have said it was HOYS material so praise where it's due as the team must have worked bloody hard to get there in the first place. I remember being shocked when it won at County level, think a pic was in H&H - and still not liking it!!

Well it'd the judges opinion that counts and they clearly thought it was the best.

What annoys me is the way you say [ QUOTE ]

as though it is an insult.

Can't believe you said that! Quality comes in all shapes and sizes (AND colours) and you need to appreciate that!

Fair enough- everyone is entitled to their opinion all i was saying si that out of all the fine specimens of animals at HOYS and they choose a coloured cob.

I think the combnation fo the fact that it was coloured and a cob makes it a bit of a joke that the best horse in the country is one such as this.

fair enuf if you think that the judegs are good jsut because they are judging at hoys- but i take it you havent been involved in showing too much then.

Also the peopel who own this horse have their horse with Robert Walker so i doubt they have been up at 4 in the morning to get the horse ready for the shows themselves, ride it, school it etc etc. so if they said to me- i was supreme at HOYS i wud say- bully to you- you didnt do any of the work yourself os therefore your prize is pretty much worhtless. they porb paid a lot of money for the cob and to get it proodcued so at the end of the day they are just cheque book winners. perosnally i wouldnt want that.

I understand what your getting at, but surely each horse is judged against the breed/type standard, and if it ticked the most boxes for its type out of everything, then why should it not win?! I personally am pleased that any predujice has obvs been taken out of the judging, and the best animal on the day in the judges opinion won regardless of colour!

question for you though what exactly is wrong with a coloured cob?? after all Britain is famous first most for its heavy breeds so isn't it rather good that a heavier animal that was (hopefully) bred within britain has had the success rather than an animal either imported or with imported lines!??!?

I am not a cob fan either but I can't say its not a nice horse and that it didn't perform the best on the day. And from the sounds a hell of a lot of work has gone into producing it as from above comments it was barely HOYS worthy not that long ago never mind supreme champ worthy.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but it has to be remembered that this was judged as the best animal and you are not qualified to the same level of those judges so it is perhaps not right for you to so blatently disregard their opinion as being 'rediculous' and 'laughable'.

And you have by the sounds of it????????????????????????????????????????????

Sour grapes by any chance?

Ok - so are you saying that you would like a coloured cob to stand for the best horse in britain in showing circles?? This rets british breeding?

Like Arko representds German breeding, Mr Springfield represents Irish breeding and the british come up with a coloured cob?

Somehow thats not right and the futrue of breeding the british horse will not be looked upon favouriably by other countries if this is all we ahve to show them!

surely you ahve to admit something is wrong with this
