Following 2 really bad falls in as many years but still determined to ride even after having been at it over 40 years I thought I might go down the stock saddle route to boost my confidence a bit especially as I am currently on crutches & can barely walk after a bad fall on Monday night. Near to me is an agent for Horsemanship saddlery that does an HP swinging fender saddle (York/Selby area). Has anyone got one of these or had any experience of them, good or bad? I like the idea that they have more of a dressage position rather than the traditional Aussie saddle. I have asked Maureen from the company to come & visit me when I am in a position to actually stand up without crutches, but wondered what people think. Any thought gratefully received.

I found them super comfy and they way you ride with a long leg, supported by the seat really encourages a deep and relaxed seat. I would prefer one with traditional stirrup bars just as I feel it was be easier to transition to riding with them rather than a swinging fender? Have a hunt around too and see if there are any Bates kimberley saddles around, I'm sure I saw one on preloved!

i can't comment on that particular saddle but my OH learnt to ride in a Wintec stock saddle and iv'e never seen anybody look more secure and relaxed, the poley's offer enormous stability and his horse loves it, iv'e ridden in one myself and loved the deep seat, i couldn't have one for my mad shaped Arab but i would definitely recommend exploring that option if i was you!! ( i quite like the Syd Hills)

Thanks Lucemoose & Shady for your positive comments, Hubby wants me to give up as men always do when they have seen you bucked off with gusto! I shall certainly do a bit of research. I have heard really good things about Syd Hills but they do seem a bit pricey in the UK. It would be great to hear from anyone who has any knowledge of the HPs.

I have recently got one of these hp saddles from Maureen who is the UK agent, so far I am extremely impressed. It is fantastic quality leather and workmanship, perfect fit to my horse, and most importantly as a nervous rider myself the main benefit is that you feel so much safer because you are a lot more secure than in an English saddle. I have not tried any other stock or western saddles so I don't know what others are like but I'm certainly not disappointed. I will say there are lots and lots of choices as to how you want the saddle ie colurs, patterns, design etc and quite a few measurements of both horse and rider need to be taken but Maureen will help with this.
