Ok so not that recent but I overheard a conversation at work recently that if we are vaccinating 12-13yo's against STDs, we are then assuming they are/will be sexually active soon right? Why are we not taking steps to prevent adolescent infections and pregnancies e.g. contraceptive implants at that age too? (Implants are available on NHS for free)

Is it sensible or do you think it's an awful thing to say?

i think the vaccinations were given at such an early age as they are more effective if given prior to girls having sex. The crazy thing was though that slightly older girls ie 15/16 yrs old, in our local area, were not given the vaccine via school and you had to make individual arrangements - how many then could slip through the net.

I personally don't think it was encouraging them to have sex as they would still be open to the worries of unwanted pregnancy and STDs but it gave them (and their parents) some peace of mind regarding incidence of cancer.

its not a vaccination against std's its vacciation against the virus that causes cervical cancer which doesnt work once a girl has had sex as they may well have contracted the virus which isnt an STD

i doesnt encourage girls to have sex and i would rather have the vacciation knowing that i am protected against cervical cancer and in no way do i think it protects me against pregnancy and STD's

yes i have had it, i had it when i was 16 via school

I had them when I was 16, not arranged through my school but I got the details in the post

I don't think it'd encourage girls to have sex

HPV is not an STD it is a virus that most sexually active people have but in some cases some strains of the virus cause ovarian cancer it is not encouraging young girls to have sex but majorly preventing them from having cancer in later life and by default guys from getting cancer of the throat and mouth. It does not protect against genital warts which is caused by another strain of HPV.

I was the first group of girls to get it at my school a good 5 years ago and sex was never mentioned purely cancer. Whether you like it or not some girls will have sex young with or without encouragement would you wish cancer on them because they made that decision? Contraceptive pill or implant will not protect you from it only condoms and dental dams and thats not 100% and who has used a dental dam ?
