Parelli stuff, uh huh.
what i really can't understand is why the horses have their ears flat back when they are playing these 'games'... they look utterly p***ed off. in the demo i saw, the 2 friesians working with Silke looked utterly f***ed off the whole time too, they did some amazing stuff but i like to have my horses going with their ears pricked!
even more fluffy than Parelli, no hope for me then!
shoot me down in flames but in parelli don't you get the horse to move in different directions with a 'carrot stick'? surely any horse is going to move away from a whip that's being waved at them!

That's amazing - I wonder how one teaches a horse that sort of thing.

In a sense it's fairly easy to teach in that you reward behaviour you want repeated and you shape towards more complex behaviour. In another sense it is not easy because you need to spend a lot of time with your horse and repeat little and often.
How to teach a horse to target a log with his foot:
- place the log relatively close to the horse, the horse is likely to look at the strange object, reward the looking (if you use a marker, like a click sound, for the behaviour it's a lot easier)
- then reward for any behaviour towards the log, looking, turning head towards log, taking a step towards log
- continue little and often. Sometimes delay the marker and wait for the behaviour to be exaggerated, e.g. if the horse has understood that it will get rewarded for looking, delay the marker until he looks and stretches towards the log
- if the horse gets close enough to touch the log give a 'jackpot' reward to indicate the final behaviour
An animal which has been trained to target will zone in on a new object as a potential source of rewards.
It's not as complex as it sounds, you just need to think ahead about what you want to train, plan your training and take your time!
I personally dont see the point in teaching a horse to go round and round in circles on the spot or go backwards for ten or so metres. Bears no resemblance to what i want to achieve when riding my horses. In fact i would do anything to teach my horse NOT to spin and reverse!
Also, cannot approve of anyone that works behind a horse without a hat on, especially pulling its tail. Even the most well mannered horse can kick out under certain circumstances.
If people want to do Parelli stuff, thats up to them but it could at least be safe and useful!
