Hi,

I thought I would post as I feel so
mad.gif
about my yard and now I think Im going to have to move.

I keep 4 horses at a local DIY yard. The yard supplies hay and straw. After the terrible summer of no rain and no grass I decided that I wanted to feed haylage to my horses. 1 is pregnant, 2 are yearlings and 1 gets skinny in a instant so wanted to feed them the best quality forage.

Asked YO who said that was fine. Brought some and found out they were charging us nearly double the cost of hay to buy so haylage only worked out about £10-15 more expensive per big bale.

I also asked if I could have another horse there as a project for the winter, maybe longer as have nothing to ride as horse is buggered.

Today was told that I HAD to feed my horses the yards hay, which I dont want to do and that I was not allowed another horse (even though there are 4 spare stables)

Im a nice livery, I pay on time, I poo pick my fields everyday, Im clean (ish) and my horses are well behaved. I would of even said before today that I classed YO as a friend (that was really just a disclaimer that shes not just saying that as she wants me to leave!!)

I just dont understand. I could get it if she supplied haylage and I didnt want hers. I think she thinks that everyone else will want it but they wont, there actually inst one horse on yard that could have it as they are all a bit sparky, lamanitic or just allergic to it.

I get that she is loosing out on the money that I would spend on hay, but I would of payed her easily more than that with another horse there. . Also people on the yard use shavings so dont buy there straw, but I do. She doesnt say they HAVE to use straw.

When I spoke to her about it she said if I wanted to feed them haylage I would have to leave.

WTF???

Then she would loose out on 5 horses livery and the straw I use.

I thought about asking her to get the haylage then she can supply it to me and make some money on it but think shes crazy so dont even want to say.

GRRRRRRR the thing is I do like the yard...

So....... Should I be upset or am I being silly?????????

Sorry about all that, rant over!!!!!

i dont understand that at all!!

Maybe if you tell her, you'll have to move all your horses somewhere else even though you dont want to, as they need to have haylage, she might suddenly think oh bugger im going to lose 5 liveries.

I think she might just be trying it on a bit.

Very strange that she won't let you have another horse even though she has the space. Doesn't she want the money?! I agree with minstral shining, explain you are going to have a think about moving. Maybe she'll change her mind then!

No consistancy

If one can use different bedding, then why not different hay/lage if the one you need is not on offer.

You'll have to have a look at what is around and then decide.

Have a hot choccy hun.

How weird, if your horses need haylage you give them haylage, as for the wanting another horse, if you pay on time and are clean good livery, why the hell can't you have another one by saying no she is mad, its more money for her!! but did you ask her this before you asked about the haylage and the fact that she wants you to have her hay? so that she is just being plain awkward about it all?...daft to me...but for your horses welfare and not her bank balance I'd be doing some trips round yards, although I would imagine it would be harder to find somewhere for all of them together, I found it hard with just two....oh i hope you manage to resolve this with her 1st....tell her how it is and if she says no again...then yes defo leave got to think of your horses not her!!!

When she said I would have to leave if I wanted haylage I said "so move all my horses away cos I want them to eat haylage?" She said yes, I said fine. That was the end of the conversation!
I dont think she cares which is funny as the only reason shes being weird is cos she wants the hay money!

as i see it she is being unreasonable...like you say its not as if she is buying in haylage that you are refusing to pay her for... i would leave, she clearly doesn't need or want your custom. go somewhere that does.... i'd go mad if i couldn't feed my horse what i wanted to
mad.gif

What kind of DIY yard reckons it can dicatate what you feed your horses? I'd be looking around if I were you

From a livery yard owners point of view, we had this trouble with liveries all wanting different bedding and hay, so we supply hay, haylage and straw and shavings, our liveries dont have to buy from us but if they buy from anywhere else then they can only buy as much as what will fit in their storage rooms, so they all buy from us anyway as it would cost them more in petrol to go elsewhere and its more convenient for them.

I cant understand what her problem is at all if your prepared to buy through her, we pay £25 per large round bale for haylage and its really nice stuff. You would think if your a good livery she would want to keep you and look after you.

YOs can be right awkward b'stards.

Play mind games with her until she unwittingly agrees to what you want, many aren't that bright either.

Unfortunately if she's bright but awkward, it might be easiest to just move. Or feed hay, as long as its good hay does it matter that much?

But she doesnt supply it!! And Im the only one that would want it if she did which I would be fine with.

I know Im being stuborn but I want to feed my horses what I want to feed them!! I want my pregnant mare to stay happy and pregnant, I want my yearling to grow and my skinny horse to be as fat as possible.

I just cant really believe that today has even happened. She was gutted the other day when 2 other livery horses left and tried to make them stay, now she doesnt give a toss.

Im also annoyed as I was booked to see a really nice looking horse for me this afternoon and after this conversation I had to ring the owner and cancel going. By the time she sorts herself out or I find somewhere new it will probably be gone

Sure somebody hasn't been stirring it up for you?

All sounds decidedly odd, and tbh I don't think I would want to stay there either.

Or Jealously?

I cant really think anyone has stirred it up as were only a small yard and no one else really cares cos their ponies cant eat the flippin stuff. I doubt anyone would be jealous of my lot lol my event horse is properly broken, my pregnant mare can be right stroppy bag... although my babies are pretty cute lol

Nothing would surprise me about yards any more

YO's - the one we have now is brilliant, but the last one we were at was awful. You had to buy your hay, haylage, straw and shavings from them. Not allowed to bring your own. Its your horse, if you want to feed something different, you should be able to. If I were you I'd move, but with 5 horses it might not be too easy. Don't lose your cool, that's the best advice I could give.

Do you think she is trying to disuade you from getting another by not letting you bring another to the yard?

Sometimes people are quick to judge others and think - "oh, how on earth is she going to pay for all those horses" or perhaps she thinks you are spreading yourself too thinkly between the ones you have already and should concentrate on the ones you have?

It appears she is trying to control what you do and what you don't do whilst around her.

I suspect you will find it hard to find another yard to accommodate all your horses so I suspect she thinks you will probably put up and shut up.

I would just ask her outright if she has a problem with you and what it is - I think its more than buying haylege elsewhere, surely its got to be more than that.

Good luck and I hope you can resolve things.

i'd be really annoyed, she is not trying to help or understand you and your horses at all....however don't lose your rag because you may end up in a worse situation, like being told to leave and with a bunch of neddies in tow it may be difficult. I would keep quiet about it all, get on with things and look for other yards as soon as possible

good luck

What a strange YO you have

.

Could she perhaps be having an "off" day ??

[/ QUOTE ]

Apparently she does this from time to time and then everybody leaves....

From the earlier post I dont think shes doing this for my own good. I have enough money to pay for these horses. I cant even ride any of the ones I have as they are pregnant/too young/compleatly buggered.

The nice lady with the horse I want to see said she could keep her for me till its all sorted if I liked her.

I just cant believe today has even happened.

I wonder if she just doesnt think I would leave over it and as all my horses could be outside ponies so that might be easier to find grass livery for the time being.

[ QUOTE ]
How easy is going to be to find some where for your horses? If they can be grass livery I would look at that option - especially if she is known for this sort of thing - if you don't leave this time how long is it going to be until she does it again?

[/ QUOTE ]

Yeah thats what I feel like. My lot will have to be split up soon as my pregnant mare will need to get settled into home where she will have her baby and my broken horse needs to winter out barefoot till spring so I guess I might have ponies all over the place!!

I just dont think she thinks I will leave because of this, but I will

I could understand if she supplied haylage, but as she doesn't then that is very off. What if your horse had COPD (think that's right) and couldn't eat hay?? We have to buy forage/bedding from YO, but we can have hay or haylage, and I'm pretty sure that if someone had a serious problem with the bedding, or had a reason for wanting to change, then she'd let them... plus it is a part/full yard so wouldn't be fair for them to have to muck out 20 different types of bedding.

Sounds extremely unreasonable and I'd be looking to move
frown.gif

i think you both need to sleep on this one, then sit down and discuss the issues like grown ups! are you reeally so clean and tidy? are your horses so well behaved? on the other side grass liveries dont generate much income when you add into the equation business rates, liability ins , water etc? is haylage the only issue.? is the yards hay not good enough quality? what sort of contract do you have? does it state that you must buy bed and hay from yard?
And Flame ..................... you must be the perfect livery not!
