So I've gone up the yard today and we are now on 3 legs.

His hock is pretty massive, its warmer than the other though also hard to really tell quite how warm as he has such a thick winter coat over it. He is resting it given the choice, though will weight bare, lame in walk and very lame in trot. I have felt for lumps and bumps and bar the visible swelling can find nothing. I ran my hand down his whole leg and applied quite a lot of pressure, especially over and around the hock and he didnt flinch at all.

Any ideas what he might have done?

A kick? Is he turned out with others? Have you cold hosed...

Yes out with others and yes cold hosed, keeping him in for the night and have given him some bute. Will reassess in the morning.... I'm the first to admit I'm rubbish with lameness so wasnt sure if it were a kick if he would flinch if I put pressure on it? or likewise would if he'd been a prat in the field and pulled / torn something would he been in pain to the touch?

I know I really should know this stuff but until a year ago he had never gone lame so I've never had to deal with lameness issues.

I've never had to deal with lameness either :) have had footiness this week for the first time but I think it is because of the wet :( well it sounds like you have done exactly the right thing with making him comfortable, I guess tonight will be a bit of a suck it and see and if not the vet will be on his way. I hope you are back tomorrow reporting no heat and that he is a bit better!

Have you been over it really carefully for thorns / punctures? Admittedly more likely if he has been over a hedge in he last few days.

Otherwise most likely explanation is a kick or a knock. If so, it shold go down in the next couple of days (unless there is a crack to the bone).

If he were mine I probably would give him basic pain relief / anti-inflammatory (bute), cold hose twice a day and have a really good look at the skin for punctures in daylight tomorrow. I would be inclined to keep him in for a few days to be on the safe side. If it improves then probably a knock. if not then call vet first half of next week (assuming it doesn't get dramatically worse).

Call vet soon as u can, penny had similar, tiny nick on left hock, seemed ok for three days then suddenly overnight it blew up huge hock, hardly weight bear on it, vet came gave antibiotic jab and pain killer and anti inflam , yo had to inject twice daily, poultice twice a day and puss was pouring out for 5 days.. Vet said dispite our best efforts just after the kick on hock, bacteria took hold. I am dreading the vet bill . It's 4 weeks now and she is only just sound. We were lucky it didn't infect the joint. Hock is still slightly bigger than other one.
