So,after planning,waiting and worrying our loan horsey arrived yesterday:)Teddy,7yo Belgian draught.
To say i was shocked is to say nothing. He is huge. No,he is HUGE! My other half looks skinny next to him!lol
Now to all of you,heavy horse experts, how to deal with such power? Is it any tips to make our life easier(ha ha,what a joke,want an easy life -dont have horses:)). Today my first time leading him from the field(OH is working)and im not looking forward to it,cos he is so huge and powerful and just wont notice me on the end of the rope:)

gosh he is a beasty!!! He looks a lovely sort though :) I'm sure he'll be fine!! Although I did once hear 'the larger the horse, the smaller the brain :O'

Look forward to more pics and updates!! I like looking at heavies, FDC has a lovely one too - maybe you should speak to her!

His feet are huuuuuge!! :) x
 
Well,we saw pictures:o We got him through friend of mine. And no,we not even tried him before we took him on. We saw pictures(loads of it and just went for it) And we never learn do we:D
Pictures really doesnt really show how huge he is:)Or how cuddly cute he is!
 
Wow, he is huge isn't he? I love his name, it really suits him and he is a gorgeous big giant

I would do some basic ground work with him, get him to stand, lead nicely, back up, over etc., etc. you could even use a clicker. Remember evey time you are with him always expect the same manners and you will be fine. Good luck with him, what are you planning to do?
 
So excited another draft horse! And a gorgeous one at that. Fany will love him, she is Belgian but she is an Ardennes. He looks a sweetie. Don't be fooled by his size, if he is anything like Fany he will be nimble and light footed, not a plod.

ohh hes lovely! when we had a shire on livery it was recommended by the shire horse society to feed him on bran, chaff and sugar beet. Cheap as chips to feed and he blossomed on it
 
He is a big boy, makes our clydie look tiny in width.

Normally the heavies are bred to be placid and easy to work with, Farra is a very true to type. However, when they do decide to have a bit of a moment, due to their size they can be lethal.

Farra is never allowed to scrape or move her legs when being tied up and groomed - if one of those legs hits you, you will know about it. Ditto any form of a nip - not funny. I expect her to remain at my side at all times, never pull and have great respect for my space. She must move on a touch of a finger and command to the side or back.

I have done a lot of ground work with her and once she did get the stick for striking out with her front leg when not wanting a bath - she was not trying to kick, just show her displeasure.

People say I am strict when my horses are tied up and round me, but I have large heavy horses and they need to be very careful round me due to their size.

Mine have lovely temperaments and can be handled and ridden by kids but they do know their place and that I won't tolerate any form of bad behaviour when being handled.

Plenty of ground work, backing up between poles, moving over on command, legs must stay planted and they must tie up and stand nicely. Feet must never be snatched back when picking out, teeth never come near. Never drag or pull - get these sorted and you will have a huge safe friend for life.
 
What they all said. I do like a good Belgian, although I refuse to have them here because I am not set up for horses of that bulk. This is draft country, Belgians tucked away in all sorts of corners, for riding as well as harness work.

Most drafts have been bought up to mind their manners and are very gentle.

How tall is he?

Enjoy him.

One of my favourite classes at Fall Fairs is the Draft Horse Young Handler, you see them like this and then in a six horse hitch all revved up and ready to go. Brilliant animals, I love the giants :D

Wow he's fab, I am jealous, he's just what my OH would like as hacker if we could afford another!

My tip is put electric fencing round your gates and fencing, my shire x cob is a right one for scratching her backside on fencing and trust me, it does not stay standing for long! She has demolished a field shelter with her arse before now!

Ahem. *minor mumble about not feeling comfortable seeing children showing horses without hats on* but it does, I will happily admit, show their exceptional temperaments! :)
 
Thats it! I had enough! Why life is SO unfair? Why? Why my husband, who going to ride on the weekends only have this wonderful,calm,gentle giant,who just stands there for 1and a half hours to be groomed and brushed and dont move at all,and walk calmly,and real sweety, and i've got this explosive maniac lunatic suicidal idiot of a warmblood,who cant
not just stand still,but leaping up and down on all four and pulling on the rope and scaring himself to death and more and cant even finish his tea because someone somewhere far away shooting?! Why mans always have the best??? Life is so unfair!:( (going away sobbing and moaning and hiding in the corner)

I know:( When in Rome though eh? I have never seen any handler wearing a hat for inline classes.

If they were riding them then they would, by law, have to wear helmets though :rolleyes:

Wonderful but stubbon character, I hope your fences are strong......

Unfortunately he is only 8 but has damaged his meniscus (in his stiffle) and prognosis is poor. At best I have a large lawnmower, I don't really want to think about worse case at the moment.:(

Enjoy him if its anything like mine he is a fairly bombproof ride!

what these two have said.... and get some steel toe-capped boots just in case (the mountain horse safety yard boots have them in and are comfy enough to wear all day).

he's lovely, and actually looks to me like he'll be a sweetie. Just get those ground rules set up and you'll be fine!
 
A really Teddy- I'm interested... what does the weight tape say? ;)

I think your chaps inner thighs are going to ache after a hack on that bad boy! x

He is a real hunk of a horse though isn't he:D we have a ted also but he's only ickle lol,:D:D
 
I love your "Teddy" !! He's got soooooo much bone. Heavies are my passion, especially Shires. If I can get my brain around it, I'll post some pix of a few of mine. I've got them in Photobucket, but I'm at a loss trying to transfer them onto HHO.

Best of luck with your new boy. You'll have a ball!!
