Huge powerful jump

Hey guys

Any tips for moving with a horse that has a huge powerful jump that sometimes sends you into orbit? Is it just a matter of jumping him as much as possible to get used to him?

Any tips greatly received :)
 
Look up!! Pick a spot high in the distance e.g. top of a tree and keep your eyes on it as you jump. Having your eyes and hence your head up means that you body automatically moves in the right way to allow for the big jump.
 
My boy is like this and I was getting jumped right off a couple if times, my instructor put my stirrups up a hole that defo helped and as above look into distance , head up and try to let the horse move under you instead of throwing your body weight up its neck.

1. Buy a good jumping saddle

2. Have a look at pictures of you jumping and I bet your shoulders are in front of the movement (which actually makes like really difficult for your horse). If so you need to approach the fence with shoulders at the vertical (bloody difficult) and instead of going to 'jumping position' then just incline at the hips and push your bum back (difficult if the size of mine). When you get it right you will really feel the difference - well I did anyway!
 
echo the other advice but also rise when you feel the shoulders lift not going into the jump in posistion as that can sometimes make you unable to feel the horse, dont throw yourself foreward. move hands up to give some room but not to tickle his ears:D

my sisters exracer as a good powerful jump on him thats what she does.
 
good tips :) looking forward to further replys on this! I have a 4YO with a big jump - have been unseated a good few times when she throws in the odd cat leap! which has resulted in me having more of a " hunting style " jumping position which I badly need to get out of the habbit of moving forward!

Scarymare, when u say shoulders at th vertical do u mean to keep my upper body upright on th approach? Then when he lifts fold at th hips but push my bum back slightly? Il need to give this a try.
