Human ‘massage gun’ for horses

The Equilibrium massage pad is £300 and something I can’t afford right now. I know where my mare gets sore and the physio always confirms these areas. I often massage her with my hands, she loves it.

Thinking of getting a human massage gun/pad.. is there such thing? Does anyone use one?

I’ve got one that is older so not like the new deep tissue thing that look like guns. I wouldn’t use one of them as it’s so hard not to over use it and end up hurting the horse more.

Mine is like this but not exactly. I’ll see if I can get a brand name later.

I am an equine myotherapist and use a human massage gun (they make equestrian ones EXACTLY the same) on my own horse and a few clients horses. They work incredibly well and you are able to get a much deeper massage from it.

This is the important part in your reply. You know where to use it and how. I’m not saying op doesn’t but others reading this may think “oh well they say it’s ok” and use it incorrectly.

Yes, I use one. £15 off Amazon & it's been really helpful to us. Body workers know I use it & are happy for me to.

I do have the Equilibrium massage pad too but the gun on it's own would make a difference to us.

I've used one on mine, just on the lowest setting and on big muscles.

I think they're tricky, we can't feel what the horse is feeling.

I have a theragun and my understanding is that you should only use it yourself to feel exactly where it is working, avoiding bony areas particularly. It's incredibly powerful and I would think very risky if you got it slightly in the wrong place, at least of causing pain if not damage. I know of someone who was crippled for weeks after a physio used one on her, somewhere along her lower spine.

Although none of us can feel what they feel, I think it's perfectly possible for those of us that are attuned to our horse can read their feedback though (and that's not just limited to a massage)

The equilibrium massage pad is a much safer and more ethical option. Otherwise just carry on with the hand massaging.

Agree - I absolutely love the theraguns at the gym, I’d almost pay the membership just to use them, but I wouldn’t let someone else near me with one as they are really vicious things and certainly wouldn’t use on a horse.

I have an equirelease gun but it tends to get used at home much more than on the horse.

I bought one at a show last year and after using on myself I think it is far too strong to risk using on the horses. It's supposed to be OK for them but it is so powerful I think it would send Angel into orbit!

I have a Niagra massager. It is just cylinder shaped and vibrates, has different speeds. It was my mothers and I came across it when turning out her house after she died. It is about 40 years old and still in excellent condition. I use it on my mare who loves it. It cant do any damage as all it does is vibrate through the muscles.
