Human hair trimmers on a dog?

Our schnautzer goes for a haircut every 3 months and it occurred to me I could do it myself - if I took the plunge!! However, would I need to invest in dog clippers or could I use the ones I trim my son's hair with? Maybe a stupid question but thought I'd ask.
 
Well, I use my trimmers on dogs, horse and husband :D:p

They were sold as pet trimmers though, so not quite the same. I originally started doing the husband's hair with them after the human trimmers died halfway through a haircut!

I'd say it's worth a shot, but just be prepared for the possibility that your trimmers aren't man enough for the job so may conk out on you. My pet trimmers were only £40 or so from Argos, so might be worth just buying some to be on the safe side?
 
i bought a set of wahl trimmers from a pet store for £30 but i broke them (dropped them, d'oh!).
I was in TK Maxx and they had a Wahl mens grooming set, exactly the same trimmer and also included a beard trimmer (exactly the same as the 'pet' foot trimmer) for £16!! It even came in a black carry case etc that the pet ones never have.

Wahl sell the same items just in different packaging with jazzy names put on the items aimed at people not pets.

Only once every three months for your mini schnauzer? Man, your groomer is NICE! LOL, I make my clients (who want feathering on theirs) to come minimum six to eight weeks.

IMO human hair trimmers aren't man enough to do the job. For a start, the blades will be too short - and then if you use the comb attachments that come with, you will either have to ensure that the coat is meticulously groomed out (no knots, tangles, debris) prior to clipping or the combs will keep popping off, snagging and leaving messy holes. The motor isn't designed to go thru that thickness of hair either.

I'm sure you could DIY the job - but I have a whole pile of "retired" pet clippers from people who have bought some and attempted a homer and then realised it was more work, mess and difficulty than they imagined and turned in their clippers to me! LOL ;)

Oh yeah, a wee word of advice, don't forget to pluck ears, trim nails while you're at it (unless you plan to get the vet to do it for you). Mini Schnauzers are notorious for their abundant ear hair, which needs regular plucking-- and more often than not, they HATE it being done. I've seen some dogs come to me with six months neglect and my word, what a mess! I've wondered how the dogs hear through that - literally it comes out like a black, hairy ball of wax looking like a rather nasty ear plug. Sore for the dog to come out too! Get a friend to help you hold the dog (perhaps by the beard with anothjer hand at the back of the head) and get in there with your fingers and gently start plucking everything that grows inside the canal. If it's waxy, you can buy ear plucking powder to help with the texture so that it grips better.

So by the time you've either done all the above, or paid the vet to do ears and nails plus their office call - would you still feel that you've saved money?

If you still want to have a go, go out and buy (if you havne't got it already) the book called "Miniature Schnuazers Today" - it has a good guide on what the trim should look like.

If you plan on just shaving the lot off now and again....disregard all the above ;)

I had this dilema last year with my springer, I ended up buying dog clippers, which weren't great, so this year decided to get it done poperly, I needed somewhere I could stay with her, previous owner used to shut her in a cupboard if they had visitors so wasnt' sure how she'd like the dryers etc, found a lovely place, and am SO glad I had it done properly she looks fab and it only took about an hour including bath and drying and clipping and CK finishing spray ha ha she just stepped out of a salon (remember that advert)

I will not be attempting to do it myself, you definately need the correct equipment and knowledge, if you're used to clipping horses then you will have the wrong idea as you clip with the flow of the hair and not against it like horses !
 
I have used the horse clippers but tobehonest they go too short. Have her done every 8 weeks now professionally and because its someone else going it she is very good for them.
