I annoyingly broke my wrist this week. We had an absolute ball progressing in our jumping this summer - my pony is 7 and we take things slowly- now I will have my arm in a cast for at least 6 weeks. Part of this I am away anyway (about 2 weeks in total not in one go) the rest I wonder if pony should just have time off… downside is she is clever and likes to be occupied and also puts on weight easily. How would you cover my injury time? I can’t pay for someone to ride her.

I have injured my knee and am in the same position. I've found a yard who will just tick mine over with a bit of hacking while I'm off. That said, mine is a chunky type at 16hh, so I'd rather keep some base fitness in as we too had been going great guns and I want to be able to pick him up quickly again once I'm fit.

My other horse is just on holiday. He is out daily, muzzled and will be fine. He's smaller and we have no particular ambitions for him.

For a pony, I think they tend to be easier to get fit, unless heavy. Some time off won't hurt but it will depend on a few factors as to how quickly you can pick him up again. The livery I had in my youth was a herd of about 20 horses on a 20 acre sheer hillside. They stayed pretty fit on there! But many are now in postage stamp style individual turnouts, and that would mean starting from a lower fitness level.

Also, my horses are very straightforward and I have no issues with others riding them. A more sensitive type I would simply turn away so, even if we need to work on fitness, I would know that the training would not have been diminished.

I broke my wrist a couple of years ago and ended up in a cast for 10 weeks in total and have to admit I started doing flat work again during the second week and when I had my check up told the doctor he did say for me to use the hand as normal.

I was better behaved when I had my back procedure done and didn't ride for 8 weeks but I lunged, long lined and walked mine out in hand and the physio mentioned that apart from a little loss of muscle on his hind quarters he was looking really good.

I was thinking of doing some in hand/ pony games clicker training type things and carrot stretches etc with my right hand maybe walks in hand if it’s not too rutted out there just do want to fall over

Depends on your break & your horses, but if not too bad and sensible horse you might be able to give them a bit of a holiday but do enough with lunging, walking, groundwork to stop them getting bored and too fat.

It tales 4 weeks for broken bones to knit. As wrists can be tricky, err on the side of caution the first 4 weeks then crack on.

I did a number on mine the other year and was in a cast for nearly 12 weeks and under very strict orders to keep it still/not use it for 8 of them. Took 6 months of physio to get full movement back 🙄

I broke my wrist two years ago and had someone ride my horse whilst I was off as otherwise they would've been impossible to get back on - as others have said though it completely depends on your horse

6 months! Aaaaargh I hope it’s not that long.

That’s understandable. My girl is generally good. After all I got her at age 4 when she was in not much work yet. I think a bit of ground play and walking work in the arena maybe progressing to some lungeing later will be it until I can get back on.

Hello everyone. I have got back on after 6 weeks once the cast was off… I am still very sore in the wrist and I feel far from fit as well so it will be a much longer and slower process back to normal than expected:-(

I normally like winter to be just about me and my pony - no clinics no shows - so I guess it’s just going to be a longer winter …with a combination of lots of groundwork and some careful riding …

It is a slow recovery unfortunately.
Do all the physio exercises they recommend they really help. If you havent had a physio referral yet I can PM all the exercises I was given.

When I broke my arm as a kid, my mum would only let me go on hacks when the cast was first off on the leadrein. I was 10. I was mortified. (To be fair, said pony was a tank with no brakes!)
